BISMARCK, ND - What a difference a season can make.
The San Diego Strike Force, after finishing 1-13 in their inaugural 2019 season, opened this year on the plus side of the standings as they clawed out a 50-36 win today over the Bismarck Bucks at Bismarck Event Center.
San Diego now stands at 1-0 while Bismarck, which finished 2-12 last year, are 0-1.
The Bucks scored the first 14 points of the game; all coming in the first part of the opening quarter. Wide receiver Eric Lauderdale scored on a three-yard run two-and-a-half minutes into the game. With just under seven minute to go in the quarter, quarterback Tasleem Wilson ran it in from nine yards out. Cody Barber's point after made it 14-0 for Bismarck. The Strike Force responded with a 31-yard touchdown toss from Michael Carrillo to running back Nathaniel Chavious to cut the Bucks' lead to 14-7 after one quarter.
Bismarck went up by 10 early in the second on a 37-yard field goal from Barber, but the Strike Force answered when Chavious ran it in from a yard out with 5:49 left in the quarter. After Barber's miss from 28 yards, the Strike Force took their first lead on Carrillo's 42-yard bomb to Marques Rodgers. Bryce Crawford hit his third extra point of the game to give San Diego the 21-17 lead with 42 seconds left. The Bucks' final drive of the half stalled, eventually giving the Strike Force the ball on their own 5 yard line with eight seconds remaining. However, the clock ran out, and they went into halftime up by four.
After the Bucks' Malik Brown picked off Carrillo deep in Bismarck territory, the Bucks drive into Strike Force territory, scoring on a 12-yard pass around the left side from Wilson to Shadrach Thornton. Barber's point aft4er put Bismarck back on top by three midway through the quarter. The lead was short-lived, however, when Rodgers bounced off several would be tacklers en route to a 45-yard return to the end zone. With the Bucks driving, Daquawn Brown intercepted Wilson in the end zone, On the next play, Carrillo fumbled in his own end zone and recovered, but was tackled for a safety.The Strike Force led 28-26 after three quarters.
Wilson was injured on the interception play and was replaced by Richard Stammetti.
The Bucks took a one-point lead when Barber nailed a 40-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter. San Diego came right back when Carrillo found a wide open Donta Armstrong in the end zone for a 18-yard score. After both teams stalled on offense, Crawford attempted a long field goal, but it was returned 50 yards by Zuril Hendrick for a touchdown. Barber put the Bucks up 36-35 with 1:26 remaining.
The Strike Force answered immediately when Crawford's squib kick bounced off Chavious' helmet and into the hands of Isaiah Bernard, who returned it to the house. Carrillo rushed in for the the two-point conversion to put San Diego ahead 43-36 at the one-minute warning. The Strike Force defense forced the Bucks into a turnover on downs. San Diego essentially iced the win on Chavious' three-yard run around the right side with 19 seconds left.
San Diego had a decided edge in passing yards; 132 to 36 for the Bucks. The teams were nearly even in terms of rushing yardage. The Strike Force had 11 penalties for 64 yards, while the Bucks were flagged six times for 62 yards.
Carrillo went nine of 17 for 132 yds with three touchdowns and a pair of picks. Chavious, who finished with three touchdowns overall, rushed 10 times for 39 yards. Rodgers had three catches for 52 yards and a touchdown. Armstrong had two receptions for 31 yards and a score. Brown finished with 10 tackles, while Ralph Harvey, Jr. had a sack and three tackles for loss.
Wilson finished five of 22 for 36 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Thornton rushed eight times for 40 yards and a touchdown. He also caught the team's only touchdown pass. Marcus Green had six tackles and an interception, while Hendrick had an interception to go along with his field goal return for TD.
The Strike Force are up next in their home opener when they face the Cedar Rapids River Kings on March 14. Kickoff is slated for 6 p.m. in that one. The Bucks feature another Sunday matinee as they head south to battle the Sioux Falls Storm on March 15 with a 1 p.m. kickoff. All times listed are pacific daylight time.
