August 14, 2020 --
Better late than never. The National Basketball Association playoffs have arrived.
In our schedules below, SCtoC staff have put together the detailed round-by-round match ups of each series in the Western and Eastern Conferences. The Milwaukee Bucks, with the league's best regular season record of 56-17, open up in the East against the eighth-seeded Orlando Magic. Other Eastern Conference match ups are the Toronto Raptors (#2) versus the Brooklyn Nets (#7), the Boston Celtics (#3) versus the Philadelphia 76ers (#6), and the Indiana Pacers (#4) versus the Miami Heat.
The Los Angeles Lakers finished the regular season with a 52-19 record which enabled them to grab the first seed in the Western Conference. They are matched up in the first round of the playoffs with the Portland Trail Blazers. Portland, the eighth seed, defeated the ninth-seeded Memphis Grizzles in a play-in series, 2-0 (given the Blazers' seeding advantage, the entered the best-of-three series automatically with a 1-0 lead). The other West match ups are the Los Angeles Clippers (#2) versus the Dallas Mavericks (#7), the Denver Nuggets (#3) versus the Utah Jazz (#6), and the Houston Rockets (#4) versus the Oklahoma City Thunder (#5).
The NBA season was suspended on March 11 after two players from the Jazz tested positive for COVID-19. After months of researching and planning, the league started back up with the 22 teams in playoff contention each playing a slate of eight games to determine final seedings. In the case of the Blazers and Grizzlies, if the eighth and ninth seeds were to finish within four games of each other in the standings, the play-in tournament would be required for the winner to advance and face the first seed in the conference. There was no such circumstance in the Eastern Conference because no team finished within four games of the eighth-seeded Magic.
All games during the restart, which began in July 30, were played in three separate arenas at the ESPN Wild World of Sports Complex at DisneyWorld in Orlando, Florida. Fans were not allowed inside the arenas due to concerns surrounding the pandemic. From the players, coaches and staffs' arrival during the second week in July, all players were contained in the NBA "Bubble" with specific and strict rules required to be followed.

The WNBA is playing an abbreviated season at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida in which the players are playing in what has been coined the "Wubble." Click for our Seattle Storm Schedule and Results.
UPDATE (8/26/20): The games on August 26 were postponed due to the August 23 police shooting of an unarmed black man, Jacob Blake, who was going to his car to check on his three children. Blake, who was shot seven times in the back by white officers, was last listed in critical condition at a Kenosha, Wisconsin hospital. Prior to their game 5 match up against the Orlando Magic, the Bucks decided to boycott the game, prompting the NBA to postpone that, and two other games later in the day. The other games affected were the Oklahoma City Thunder vs. Houston Rockets and the Portland Trail Blazers vs. Los Angeles Lakers. Milwaukee is located about 40 miles north of Kenosha, where the shooting took place. The Bucks-Magic game was scheduled to start at 1 p.m. (PT), while the other games were at 3:30 p.m. and 6 p.m., respectively. NBA players have used their platform during the restart, and now the playoffs, to draw attention to and call for change in racial injustice in law enforcement.
UPDATE (8/27/20): Games on August 27 have been postponed in the wake of the August 23 shooting of Jacob Blake (see above paragraph). Though there was some dissent, reports are that players voted to resume the playoffs. Talks are continuing between the players and the league. No new dates have been announced, nor has the league committed to its original slate of games on August 28 or following that date.
