The following is the 2021 Regular Season Schedule for the Spokane Indians.

The Indians are members of the newly formed High-A West league, formed out of Minor League Baseball's restructuring of its leagues and teams. The High-A West, formerly known as Class A-Advanced, is one of three restructured leagues playing at the High-A level, which is three grades below Major League Baseball (Triple-A, Double-A ranking higher than High-A). 

In addition to Spokane, the new High-A West will feature five former Northwest League teams: the Eugene Emeralds, Everett AquaSox, Hillsboro Hops, Tri-City Dust Devils and Vancouver Canadians. All six teams will play in a divisionless league, abolishing the North and South (formerly East and West) divisions of the NWL.

The Boise Hawks and Salem-Keizer Volcanoes were not invited from the NWL to High-A West, and are no longer apart of MiLB. Boise is now a member of the reformed Pioneer League, the former Class-A Short Season league that is now an independent baseball league with granted status as a Partner league of MLB. Meanwhile, Salem-Keizer was not offered a player development license with any MLB club, forming their own independent league called the Mavericks League, which consists of four teams based in the Salem Metropolitan area and have all its games played at Volcanoes Stadium. 

With the move up in the minor league baseball ranks, High-A West will play a 120-game season (60 Home/60 Away) versus the 76 games (38 Home/38 Away) played in the Northwest League. With the addition of games, the High-A West season will now begin in early May and run through mid-September.

Spokane also changed parent MLB club affiliations prior to 2021, becoming the High-A affiliate of the Colorado Rockies. Spokane had previously been the affiliate of the Texas Rangers from 2003-2020. The ten-year agreement means Spokane will be a Rockies affiliate through 2030, and is the ninth MLB affiliated team in the history of the Spokane Indians. 

Under the new MLB player development system, an emphasis on reduced travel distances and increase of days off influences the 2021 schedule. Spokane will play each team in a six-game series, starting on Tuesday and ending on Sunday. Mondays are now designated as a travel day/off-day.

With a new league and a new affiliate, Spokane looks to jump back on the winning track after missing the entire 2020 season due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. In what was ultimately their final season as members of the Northwest League in 2019, Spokane finished the season with a 45-31 record, winning the North Division in the First and Second half. However, Spokane struggled against rival Tri-City in the North Division series, losing 2 games to 1.

The 2021 season begins May 4th at home against the Eugene Emeralds. Spokane will then hit the road the next week, traveling to Hillsboro to take on the Vancouver Canadians, who are playing their 2021 home games at Ron Tonkin Field this season due to travel restrictions between the United States and Canada due to the COVID-19 pandemic. 

Spokane will have a stretch of two weeks (June 1-13, July 27-August 8) of their longest homestand taking on Tri-City and Vancouver in the first set, and Vancouver and Everett in the second set. Spokane's will also have two stretches of long road trips, with the first set taking place June 15-27 against Tri-City and Hillsboro, followed traveling to Vancouver and Everett from September 7-19.

Because of the pandemic, there will not be a postseason across all of MiLB. Spokane will end its season on the road against the Everett AquaSox, with the final game played on September 19th.

Monthly Update: The new era of Spokane Indians baseball got off to an extremely rocky start, a fitting metaphor for the team's new affiliate status of the Colorado Rockies. Spokane dropped Opening Night to the Eugene Emeralds in a 9-5 loss. The series would turn ugly from that point afterward, as the Emeralds took 5 of the High-A West standard 6 game series, including a 15-1 pummeling in the series finale.

Things got off to a better start when Spokane took on the Vancouver Canadians, who are calling Ron Tonkin Field in Hillsboro as home due to COVID travel restrictions with the Canadian border. Spokane got a win in Game 1, 4-3 in 10 innings, but then went on to lose the next 5. Although a 120 game schedule is a long season, a 2-10 start wasn't something Indians fans were expecting.

Spokane began to rebound as soon as they returned home, taking 4 of 6 from the Everett AquaSox, who were at the top of the league at the time of the series. Spokane then finished the month of June taking on Eugene, splitting the series 3-3.

Entering June, Spokane sits in 5th place with a 9-15 record. However, after a 2-10 start, finishing strong with a 7-5 record could be the turning point for Spokane. They have a 1 game lead over the Tri-City Dust Devils (8-16) and are 6 games back of Eugene, Everett and Vancouver for 1st in the league standings (15-9 records each). Spokane begins a long homestand on June 1st, with their first meeting against their rivals in Tri-City, with Vancouver coming into town shortly afterward.

Monthly Update: Although the month of June started off much like how May did, with a loss, Spokane had a better start to the second month of the season as compared to the first. After dropping their first contest with Tri-City, the Indians roared back with a 9-1 thrashing. The Dust Devils would take Game 3, but Spokane would go on to clinch the series, finishing the final 3 games in dominating fashion, including back-to-back 8-3 victories.

However, the good vibes ended when the Vancouver Canadians made their first visit to Spokane. Their struggles against Vancouver would continue, this time taking two games out of the six game series as opposed to just one in their prior meeting at Hillsboro. Spokane would hit the road down to Pasco to take on the Dust Devils, dropping the first game 2-3 in 10 innings, then proceed to win 4 of the next 5 to clinch the series.

Spokane would return to Hillsboro, this time to take on the Hops for the first time in 2021. Spokane would earn the series split after taking Game 1 and losing the next 3 before rebounding with W's over the weekend. Spokane would end the month on a sour note, losing the first two against Tri-City to finish off June during a record breaking heatwave in the Inland Northwest.

Entering July, Spokane managed to climb in the standings into 4th place after a horrible 2-10 start to the season. Spokane went over .500, with a 13-12 mark (6-8 at Avista Stadium, 7-5 away) to improve their overall record to 22-28 (11-15 home, 11-13 away).

In the overall standings, Spokane 10.5 games behind division leading Eugene (32-17), who are pursued closely by Everett (31-17) and Vancouver (26-24). Spokane has a 3 game lead over Hillsboro (19-29) and a 5 game lead over Tri-City (17-32).

Spokane continues their 4th of July weekend series with Tri-City before heading south to Hillsboro to take on Vancouver. The rest of July will see alternating home and road series, as Spokane will then head home to take on Eugene, then head back to Pasco to take on Tri-City, before returning home to take on Vancouver once more.

Monthly Update: The 4th of July weekend at the start of the month looked to be good for the Spokane Indians, winning 3 in a row against Tri-City before dropping the series finale (on July 4th none the less). For the rest of the month, the Indians would alternate series each week, one on the road, one at home. Spokane would split the series in Hillsboro against the Vancouver Canadians, then enter something of a slugfest against the Eugene Emeralds which saw one or both teams score double digit runs in each game of the series. Unfortunately, Spokane would only win 2 of the 6 games in the series before heading on the road and splitting another series against Tri-City.

The final series of the month, at home against Vancouver, would provide some of the most exciting games, with scores looking like video game numbers -- from a 10-9 extra innings loss, to winning high scoring contests 8-6, 11-10, and 15-11. Spokane would ultimately lose the final game of the series, but win the overall series 4-2.

Spokane managed to make ground in the standings in July, going 15-12 (9-6 at Avista Stadium, 6-6 away) to improve their overall record (not counting the August 1st game) to 37-40 (20-21 home, 17-19 away).

Entering August 1st, the overall standings see the Indians 14.5 games back behind division leading Everett (50-26) and 7 behind second place Eugene (44-33). Spokane holds a narrow lead over Hillsboro (34-42) and Vancouver (34-43) and a sizeable distance from last place Tri-City (31-46).

August will see the Indians with the chance to chip at Everett's lead, as they will face the AquaSox in two series this month, in addition to more Tri-City series and a series against Hillsboro for the first time since late June.

End of Season Update: The Spokane Indians were scorching in August, going 20-6 and gaining significant ground in the High-A West league standings, including a season high 10-game winning streak. The theme of winning would continue in September, going 10-3 in the final month to finish in second place, 0.5 games back of the first place Eugene Emeralds.

With the hot end to the season, Spokane earned a bid in the first ever High-A West Championship, played between the first and second place teams in a best-of-five series. They caught up and surpassed the Everett AquaSox, ending the season 6 games ahead. 

The Indians could very well have earned the #1 seed, but two cancelled contests against Tri-City due to the Dust Devils having a COVID outbreak, and two rained out matches against Everett resulted in Spokane finishing the season 67-49 and a loss of four games. 

Spokane will face Eugene beginning Tuesday, September 21st in a best-of-five with all games being played at Avista Stadium. Eugene will be considered the home team in Games 3-5. This is due to the fact the Emeralds' lease at PK Park, the stadium shared with the Oregon Ducks, ran out on September 10th. Due to High-A West going full season as opposed to short season as in the past, Eugene has to consider opposing ballparks as "home field" until a solution can be found.

Congratulations to the Emeralds for winning the championship. I had predicted that it would be the Indians, but I guess it was not meant to be.
