Blizzard 49, Xtreme 29
5/8/21 --
GREEN BAY, WI - The Green Bay Blizzard took advantage of defensive back Corey Turner's second quarter interception return to put some distance between themselves and the Louisville Xtreme, and held off the Xtreme in the second half to emerge with a 49-29 win tonight at the Resch Center.
The Blizzard go 2-1 for the first time since the 2015 season. They are trying to further solidify themselves as a power in the Indoor Football League. Additionally, the win improved Corey Roberson's regular season record to .500 at 13-13.
After forcing the Xtreme to a three-and-out, the Blizzard scored on their first play from scrimmage when Damion May fired a bomb to the back left corner of the end zone, hitting Kezlow Smith, who dove over the dasher board for the score. The Xtreme countered with 41-yard drive capsulized by a two-yard run from Dalton Oliver. Due to a bobbled snap on the point after, the conversion failed and the Xtreme trailed by a point. The Blizzard added a 27-yard field goal from Henry Nell to give them a 10-6 lead which stood through the end of the opening quarter.
Derek Vacha pulled the Xtreme back to within a point with a 28-yard field goal on the first play of the second quarter. Green Bay came back with a 15-yard pass from May to Eric Thomas, Jr. to put the Blizzard up 17-9. It was on Louisville's next possession where the game really changed. Oliver heaved a pass deep just inside the end zone, where Turner dove backward with the ball, got up and weaved his way to the Xtreme's five-yard-line. Kerrion Moore's two-yard touchdown run gave the Blizzard a double-digit lead.
Louisville responded with a two-yard pass from Oliver to Todd Athey to pull the Xtreme to within eight points, but the Blizzard came right back on May's 11-yard pass to Thomas. The latter touchdown would give the Blizzard a 31-16 lead at halftime, and they would receive the opening kickoff during the second half.
The Blizzard extended the lead to 38-16 on a 16-yard touchdown scamper from Moore. The Xtreme were in comeback mode, and added a touchdown on a 16-yard pass from Oliver to Edgar Poe. The Blizzard counted with a five-run sneak from May and the score was 44-23. Poe caught a one-yard touchdown pass from Oliver to narrow the deficit. However, Derek Vacha's extra point was blocked and returned into the end zone for two points. The Blizzard led 46-29 heading into the fourth quarter.
The teams traded missed field goals before the Xtreme got the ball back. Oliver's deep pass to the right side was intercepted by the Blizzard's Malik Reeves. Green Bay was forced to settle for Nell's 25-yard field goal, but that would prove to be enough for the 20-point margin.
Oliver finished with three touchdowns through the air and one on the ground, but tossed a pair of interceptions. Poe and Athey finished with two and one touchdowns, respectively for the Xtreme. For the Blizzard, May also had three passing touchdowns and one on the ground. Moore scored a pair of touchdowns on the ground, while Thomas caught a couple of scoring passes from May.
The Blizzard (2-1) will visit the Bismarck Bucks (1-0) on May 15 at 4:05 p.m. (pacific time). The Xtreme (0-2) have a bye week before hosting the Frisco Fighters on May 22 at 4:05 p.m. (pacific time). Click for the SCtoC 2021 Indoor Football League schedule.
