Pirates 36, Bucks 18
5/8/21 --
BISMARCK, ND - After finding themselves down 12 points in the first quarter, the Massachusetts Pirates reeled off 20 unanswered points in the second, and held off the Bismarck Bucks, 36-18, in week 3 of the Indoor Football League season tonight at Bismarck Event Center.
The Pirates held the Bucks scoreless throughout the second and most of the third quarters to improve their record to 2-1. All three of the Pirates' games have been on the road, which results in them playing eight of their remaining 13 games at home. The Bucks fell to 1-1 on the young season.
Bismarck scored on a pair of field goals from Cody Barber to start the first quarter, giving it a 6-0 lead with 6:29 left. After a missed field goal from Gabriel Rui and with the ball on their own 5, Glenn Cuiellete heaved a 45-yard touchdown bomb to Raheem Harvey. Barber's kick was blocked, giving the Bucks a 12-0 lead through the end of the quarter.
The second quarter was all Massachusetts. They finally got on the board on Alejandro Bennifield's seven-yard pass to Thomas Owens. Rui's point after try was no good, leaving the Bucks' lead at 12-6. The Bucks nearly scored on the ensuing drive. It appeared Cuiellete crossed the goal line prior to fumbling. However, Pirates head coach Patrick pass challenged and the play was ruled a fumble which the Pirates had recovered in the end zone. Massachusetts completed another scoring drive with a six-yard touchdown pass from Bennifield to Darren Carrington II. Barber missed a field goal try and the Pirates capitalized with a seven-yard run from Bennifield.
Bismarck held Massachusetts to a four-and-out, then narrowed the deficit to 20-18 on an 11-yard pass from Cuiellete to Harvey. However, the Pirates countered on Bennifield's 21-yard touchdown pass to former Dallas Cowboy Terrance Williams. The Pirates led 26-18 and were driving at the end of the third quarter.
Rui extended the lead early in the first quarter on an 18-yard field goal. Barber and the Bucks failed to cut into the deficit as his field goal was missed. The Pirates scored on a one-yard plunge from Bennifield with 4:48 left and they were able to hold off the Bucks from there.
In all, Bennifield ended with three touchdown passes and a pair of touchdown runs. Williams, Owens and Carrington each had a scoring grab for the Pirates. For the Bucks, Cuiellete finished with two touchdown tosses; both to Harvey.
The teams will meet again on July 10 when the Bucks head to Worchester, Massachusetts to face the Pirates.
The Pirates will have a week off before hosting their IFL home opener on May 22 against the Spokane Shock at 4:05 p.m. (PST). The Bucks are in action next week as they host the Green Bay Blizzard at 4:05 p.m. (PST). Click for the SCtoC 2021 Indoor Football League schedule.
