In a stunning announcement, Head Coach Dan Hughes has announced his retirement effective immediately. 

Hughes, who will remain as an assistant coach for Team USA Basketball in the Tokyo Olympics, has announced his retirement after 20 years as a WNBA coach.

“After over 40 years of coaching basketball, I want to finish my career with the focus and determination with which I started,” said Hughes. “The Seattle Storm is in amazing shape, after two championships and a terrific playoff run in 2019, I would like to announce my retirement from the WNBA. I believe now is the right time because the team is performing well, but the rigors of being a head coach in the WNBA have taken their toll on me. I look forward to coaching with USA Basketball at the 2021 Olympics then leveraging my experience to give back to the game in other ways. Mary and I value the relationships we have formed in Seattle over the past four years and want to thank everyone for their ongoing support.” - Dan Hughes

Hughes retires from the WNBA with 286 career regular season wins, tied for third most wins for a HC in WNBA history (T-Bill Lambeer, Las Vegas Aces). In his 20-year coaching career, Hughes coached the Charlotte Sting (1999), Cleveland Rockers (2000-2003), San Antonio Silver Stars/San Antonio Stars (2005-2009; 2011-2016) and the Seattle Storm (2018-2019; 2021). He won 2 WNBA Coach of the Year awards (2001, 2007), and won 1 WNBA Title (2018). He also guided the Silver Stars/Stars franchise to its only WNBA Championship appearance in 2008.

Hughes will be replaced by Assistant Coach Noelle Quinn, who becomes the seventh coach in the 22 season history of the Storm.

As a former WNBA player, Quinn played for 12 seasons with the Minnesota Lynx (2007-2008), Los Angeles Sparks (2009-2011), and Phoenix Mercury (2015-2016). She had two stints with the Seattle Storm, her first coming from 2013-2014 and her second from 2016-2018. She retired after the 2018 season, having won the 2018 WNBA Championship for the first time in her career. She became an assistant coach in 2019, joining Hughes's staff. In 2020, she won her second WNBA Championship, first as a coach, under interim coach Gary Kloppenburg.

F Breanna Stewart has been named the WNBA's Western Conference Player of the Month for May.

The Storm went 5-1 in May. Stewart averaged 22.5 points per game (2nd in WNBA), 10.3 rebounds per game (2nd), and 2.0 blocks per game (T-5th).

The 2021 game is a unique All-Star game, which will celebrate the 25th Season of the WNBA. The WNBA All-Stars will go up against the USA Basketball Women's National Team.

Bird, Loyd, and Stewart, who are all members of Team USA, will partake in the game.

This is the 12th All-Star selection for 40-year-old Sue Bird (2002, 2003, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2009, 2011, 2014, 2015, 2017, 2018 All-Star selections). Bird's 12th selection is the most All-Star selections in WBNA history (Next closest: Tamika Catchings, SF, Indiana Fever - 10 selections ).
