BISMARCK, ND - And, round two goes to the Bucks.
The Bismarck Bucks relied on their special teams and defense to seal the deal as they dealt the Green Bay Blizzard their second loss in three weeks tonight at the Bismarck Event Center. The Bucks' 58-46 win lifted them to a 2-1 record on the young season, while the Blizzard fell to 2-2.
The Blizzard struck first on a 26-yard run from Kerrion Moore, but the Bucks came right back with a six-yard run from Justin Rankin and the game was knotted at 7-7. The Bucks' Cody Barber's squib kick was recovered by Derreon Jackson, giving the Bucks the ball right back. They took advantage on a 20-yard field goal from Barber. Eric Thomas, Jr. returned the ensuing kickoff to the house to put Green Bay back up, 14-10. Bismarck struck right back with Richard Stammetti's 11-yard pass to Rankin. The Bucks led 17-14 af the end of the opening quarter.
After Stammetti's fumble was recovered by the Blizzard's Malik Reeves, Green Bay scored on a 12-yard run from quarterback Darmion May. Bismarck quarterback Glen Cuiellette, in for Stammetti, was intercepted by Mason Gray. The Blizzard capitalized on a seven-yard run from Thomas. After another Blizzard score, the teams traded field goals, including a 38-yarder from Barber as time expired in the second quarter. The Blizzard led at the half, 31-27.
Bismarck committed three turnovers in the opening half, but still found themselves down by onl four points and would get the ball back to open the second half. Gray's interception was the third of the season; all of which coming against the Bucks.
Bismarck opened the third quarter with a four-minute drive ending with Cuiellette's three-yard draw. Barber missed the extra point, leaving the Bucks up 33-31. The Blizzard drive down to the Bucks' three yard line, but were stopped on fourth down., giving the Bucks the ball back with a two-point lead. The took advantage of that lead, scoring on a 34-yard pass from Cuiellette to Rankin. Barber missed his second straight point after try, but the Bucks were up 39-31 nonetheless. The Blizzard tied it up when May hit Trevon Saunders on a 20-yard touchdown strike to knot the game at 39 apiece. That's how they entered the final quarter.
The Bucks took advantage of some special teams and defensive opportunities in the fourth. Cuielette's one-yard run gave them a 45-39 lead with 13:38 left in the quarter. The Blizzard took what would be their last lead of the game when May ran it in from three yards out. On the ensuing kickoff, Nell's squib kick bounced off the the leg of a front return man and was scooped up by Derreon Jackson, who returned it nine yards to put the Bucks up by six. They added to the margin when Lawrence Ross III recovered a fumble and returned it 23 yards for the score with 5:13 remaining in the final stanza. That made for the final margin of 58-46.
Bismarck won the season opener between the teams, 41-35, on a 14-yard touchdown pass from Cuiellette to Raheem Harvey with 6.8 seconds remaining at Green Bay. This was the second of two games between the teams this season.
