SIOUIX FALLS, SD - The Iowa Barnstormers outscored the Sioux Falls storm 21-3 in the fourth quarter to secure their first win of 2021 in the season opener for both of the Indoor Football League teams.
Iowa led 35-33 heading into the final quarter before the pile on to give the Barnstormers their first-ever win in Sioux Falls in six seasons of IFL action. The Barnstormers go to 1-0 on the season, while the Storm start 0-1.
It was the first Hall of Fame Game in IFL history as four new members were inducted into the Hall. They include former Sioux City Bandits and Buffalo Bills running back Fred Jackson, longtime and current head coach of the Storm Kurtiss Riggs, celebrated coach Heron O'Neal and the late John Pettit, an owner and executive of the Barnstormers. The Barnstormers opened the scoring with a 26-yard-old touchdown pass from Daquan Neal to Beau Tanner. Nathan Criswell's point after put them up 7-0 just four minutes into the game. Former Cedar Rapids River King Nate Chavious put the Storm on the board with a four yard run into the end zone. Chase Vinatieri's kick failed, leaving the Storm down by a point. With 1:52 left in the opening quarter, Neal found Connor Hollenbeck for 20 yards and the Barnstormers found themselves up 14-6; a lead which lasted through the end of the first quarter.
Lorenzo Brown, Jr.'s two-yard pass to Alonzo Moore, along with Vinatieri's extra point, pulled the Storm to within 14-13 before Neal found Andrew Mahoney for a 43-yard touchdown and the Barnstormers were by eight points by halftime.
Sioux Falls scored on a 19-yard run from Chavious, but Vinatieri's kick failed to open the third quarter which put the Storm into striking range. Neal then found Mahoney for a 25-yard touchdown and Criswell's point after gave the Barnstormers a 28-19 lead. Brown rushed for a five-yard score with 6:44 left in the third to keep the Storm close. On the first play of their next drive, Neal found Mahoney for a 36-yard touchdown and the Barnstormers were back up by nine. Sioux Falls scored once more on Chavious' third touchdown run of the game, a 17-yarder to pull the Storm within a 35-33 deficit with 38 seconds left in the quarter.
Evan Owens started off the scoring for Iowa, soring on a one yard run. Along with Criswell's extra point, the Barnstormers led by nine at 43-32. Vinatieri added a 27-yard field goal to make it a one-score game, but the Barnstormers came right back. Neal found Tanner for a 10-yard touchdown before a Brown fumble was recovered by Kenton Bartiett of the Barnstormers for a touchdown, extending the Barnstormers lead to 20 points at 56-36 with 2:50 to go. The Storm turned the ball over on downs and the Barnstormers were able to run out the final 27 seconds of the clock and preserve the win.
Iowa posted 319 total yards to 209 for Sioux Falls. Neal, the 2019 IFL Most Valuable Player, went 16 of 22 for 254 yards with sic touchdowns and no interceptions. Mahoney caught six balls for 128 yards to go along with his three scoring receptions. Brown completed 12 of 26 passes for 113 yards and a touchdown. Chavious finished with 66 yards off 11 rushes and three touchdowns.
The game was broadcast live, and through streaming services on the Stadium television network. The IFL announced last week that Stadium would feature a game of the week. Next week's game will feature the Arizona Rattlers visiting the Storm on May 22 with a 5:05 p.m. (pacific) kickoff. The Storm will visit the Barnstormers on June 19 in the second and final matchup between the teams this regular season.
