Fighters 36, Shock 33
5/15/21 --
SPOKANE, WA - The Frisco Fighters flew into Spokane tonight and accomplished their mission.
In a long-awaited Indoor Football League debut for both teams, the Fighters scored the game-winning touchdown with 10 seconds left as they turned away the Spokane Shock, 36-33, tonight at Spokane Veterans Memorial Arena.
Both teams were set to begin play in 2020 prior to that season being cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The game matched veteran indoor head coaches Clint Dolezel of the Fighters and Billy Back of the Fighters, but it game down to the fourth quarter rushing attack by the Fighters to put the game away. The Fighters open the season 1-0, while the Shock go to 0-1.
The Shock won the opening coin toss and uncharacteristically elected to receive the ball first, though what would ensue initially would look more like a baseball score.
They were held to a 25-yard Sawyer Petre field goal to five the Shock a 3-0 early lead. After holding the Fighters to a four-and-out, the Shock got the ball back deep in their own territory. Quarterback Charles McCullum fumbled the ball in the end zone, but was able to recover it in the end zone before being sacked and, the Shock's lead was cut to 3-2 with 6:40 left in the opening quarter. Jonathan Bane's five-yard pass to Mark Munson, along with Bane's two-point conversion pass to Lance Evans gave the Fighters a 10-3 lead which lasted through the end of the quarter.
Frisco had a kicker on the roster. Kristov Martinez was signed late in the week, but was not active for the game, so the Fighters were forced to go for two-point conversions during the duration of the games. They also did not have the realistic ability to attempt field goals as well.
The Shock knotted the score at 10-10 when Charles McCullum rushed in from 11 yards. The Fighters struck right back with a two-yard run from Demarcus Felton. Munson's conversion run put the Fighters up by 18-10 with 4:06 remaining in the first half. Kamrin Solomon's 15-yard pass from McCullum and Sawyer's extra point pulled the Shock to within a point at 18-17 with 53 seconds left. After stopping the Fighters' offense, the Shock took the halftime lead of 20-18 when Petre nailed a 25-yard field goal as time expired.
The Fighters scored the only touchdown of the third quarter on a two-yard pass from Bane to Munson. Bane's pass for the two-point conversion was incomplete. Frisco led 24-20 at the end of three.
Davonte Sapp-Lynch's two-yard touchdown gave the Shock a 26-24 lead early in the final quarter. The final quarter was, in fact, a see-saw affair, as Demarcus Felton scored on a two-yard run to put the Fighters up by four, but Sapp-Lynch countered for the Shock on a five-yard run with 2:24 left and the Shock were up 33-30. Felton's one-yard touchdown run with 10 seconds left gave the lead to the Fighters. Their two-point conversion failed, but Spokane still faced a three-point deficit. Their rally attempt was thwarted at the end when McCullum's pass to the right side was intercepted by the Fighters Joel Dullary as time expired.
There were no fans at Spokane Veterans Memorial Arena due to the fact the arena was being used as a COVID-19 vaccination site. It is anticipated due to the vaccinations which have been taken place thus far and those planned in the future that fans will be allowed in the arena for the Shock's next home game, June 19 against the Northern Arizona Wranglers.
The Fighters are back in action on May 22 when they visit the Louisville Xtreme at 4:05 p.m. The Shock are next up on May 22 when they head across the country to meet the Massachusetts Pirates at 4:05 p.m. All times listed are pacific daylight time.
