Blizzard 42, Sugar Skulls 36
5/21/21 --
GREEN BAY, WI - Damion May threw for four touchdowns -- three to Eric Thomas, Jr. -- and the Green Bay Blizzard defense came up big in the second half as the Blizzard turned away the Tucson Sugar Skulls tonight at the Resch Center.
Green Bay's 42-36 win improves its record to 3-2 as they head into their first bye wee of the season. Tucson was playing their 2021 season opener and fell to 0-1. It was the first meeting between the teams.
Tucson looked good on its opening drive, scoring on a four-yard run from Mike Jones. Green Bay came right back with a five-yard touchdown strike from May to Keshaun Taylor. After the Blizzard defense held the Sugar Skulls to a four-and-out, the Blizzard attempted a drive, but a long reception to Thomas was fumbled and recovered by Tucson. The game was knotted at 7-7 at the end of the first quarter.
The Sugar Skulls struck first in the second with a one-yard run from quarterback Demry Croft. Thomas earned some redemption with May found him for a seven-yard touchdown pass to tie the game at 14 apiece. The Sugar Skulls came right back on a 19-yard touchdown pass down the middle from Croft to Sheldon Augustine. The Blizzard responded with a five-yard run from May, but Henry Nell's kick went wide to the right. Croft's 12-yard pass to Kent Shelby. Green Bay fumbled the ensuing kickoff, which was recovered by Cory Butler-Byrd of Tucson. The Sugar Skulls tried a field goal to close out the half, but Daniel Bowen's attempt was blocked, leaving Tucson with a 28-20 at the break.
It was all Thomas and Green Bay in the third quarter. The Blizzard took the opening kickoff and drove down to the eight yard line, reaching the end zone on an eight-yard pass from May to Thomas. After forcing a dour-and-out, the Blizzard took their first lead of the game on a May's two-yard pass to Thomas as time expired at the end of the quarter. May's pass for the two-point conversion sailed high, giving Green Bay a 33-28 lead to head into the fourth.
With the Sugar Skulls driving in their own territory, Croft was intercepted by Momodou Mbye. Green Bay capitalized on the turnover with an 18-yard field goal from Nell to go up by eight at 36-28 with 10:06 to go in regulation. Tucson sited the score with a two-yard run from Croft. Jones' run for the two-point conversion made the score 36-36 with just under five minutes left to play. But, the Blizzard came back on the first play of their next drive when Kerrion Moore scampered eight yards to the end zone. Nell's kick was no good, but the Blizzard had the lead. The Sugar Skulls moved the ball into Blizzard territory, but were stopped on fourth down on with 17 seconds remaining. A nine-yard rush from May enabled the clock to count to 0:00.
May had a touchdown on the ground in addition to his four in the air. Thomas' three scoring grabs give him seven on the season. The veteran receiver had played for the Bismarck Bucks and Nebraska Danger in 2019. The Sugar Skulls' Croft, making his first start threw for two scores and ran for another two. Brown, whose rushing touchdown opened the game, was the 2019 IFL rushing leader for the Sugar Skulls.
The Sugar Skulls are back in action on May 29 when they visit the Duke City Gladiators with a 5:05 kickoff. The Blizzard have a bye next week before hosting the Arizona Rattlers on June 4 at 5:05 p.m. All times listed are pacific daylight time. Click for the SCtoC 2021 Indoor Football League schedule.
