SIOUX FALLS, SD - The Sioux Falls Storm seem recently to have the Arizona Rattlers' number.
Sioux Falls defeated Arizona in the 2019 United Bowl, and they came out with the same result; a 50-46 win over the Rattlers tonight at the Denny Sanford Premiere Center. Both teams finish the weekend with identical 1-1 records.
The Storm got on the board first with a 22-yard pass from Lorenzo Brown, Jr. to JoJo Gause. A two-point conversion put the Storm up 8-0. Darrell Monroe and the Rattlers answered with a seven-yard run. On the next play from scrimmage, Brown hit Gause for a 39-yard score and the Storm took a seven-point lead, 14-7, which lasted through the end of the quarter.
Chase Vinatieri put the Storm up by two scores with a 27-yard field goal at the 8:56 mark of the second quarter. The Rattlers struck back with a one-yard run from Drew Powell, and then scored again on a 14-yard touchdown pass from Powell to Jarrod Harrington to give the Rattlers a 21-17 lead with 26 seconds left. Nate Chavious put the Storm back up with a 58-yard kickoff return to the end zone. Arizona assumed 24-23 lead at halftime with a 25-yard field goal on the last play of the half.
Monroe extended the lead to 31-23 with a three-yard run early in the third quarter. The Storm answered on Gause's 25-yard touchdown pass from Brown. Vinatieri's kick failed, but Sioux Falls came back six minutes later with a 11-yard pass from Brown to Brandon Sheperd. The Storm led 36-31 heading into the final quarter.
Arizona scored on the first play of the fourth when Powell hit Harrington for a three-yard touchdown. The Storm came back in their next possession with Brown's two-yard pass from Brown to Damian Ford. They extended the lead to 50-38 with 2:45 left in the fourth with a 24-yard touchdown pass from Brown to Chavious. Arizona drove down and scored with 10 seconds left on Powell's four-yard run. The Rattlers attempted an onside kick, but it was recovered by the Storm, who were able to run out the clock.
The Rattlers accumulated 144 rushing yards and 193 receiving yards, While the Storm had 123 rushing and 185 passing. There were only six total accepted penalties in the game; three by each team.
Brown went 15 of 23 or 189 yards with six touchdowns, and rushed for 37 yards. Gause finished with four receptions for 96 yards to go along with his three touchdowns. Marquis Hendrix tallied 10 tackles, and Brandon Roe intercepted Powell on a pair of occasions. For the Rattlers, Powell hit 17 of 26 passes for 193 yards with a pair of touchdowns and two picks, and rushed for a 56 yards and a score. Monroe added 74 rushing yards to three touchdowns, and Harrington caught nine passes for 112 yards and two scores. Dillon Winfrey and Devin Cockrell each recorded eight tackles for Arizona's defense.
The Rattlers are on a bye in week 6. They will be back in action on June 4 with kickoff scheduled for 5:05 p.m. The Storm will visit the Louisville Extreme on May 29.
