LOUISVILLE, KY - It was a dogfight, but the Sioux Falls Storm were able to hold off a late Louisville rally to emerge with a 49-43 win at the KFC YUM! Center tonight.
Sioux Falls was playing it's first road game of the season, against the expansion Xtreme. The Storm improve to 2-1 on the season while the Xtreme fell to 0-4. The teams will meet once more this season as the Xtreme visit the Storm on August 7.
Louisville got on the board first when Dalton Oliver found Keyondre Craig on their opening drive of the game. After Nate Chavious' kickoff return for touchdown, the score was knotted at 7-7 four minutes into the opening quarter. The teams each added field goals and the game was tied 10-10 at the end of the first.
Derek Vacha hit his second field goal, of 22 yards, to give the Xtreme a 13-10 lead midway through the second quarter. Chavious broke off a 34-yard run to put the Storm up by four. Chase Vinatieri's field goal of 21 yards gave the Storm a 20-13 halftime lead.
Tommy Armstrong, Jr., who played last with the Nebraska Danger in 2019, came in at quarterback for the Storm and scored on the first play from scrimmage of the third quarter with a 34-yard run. Louisville cut into the Sioux Falls lead with a 33-yard touchdown pass from Oliver to Todd Athey, but the Storm made the score 34-20 at the midpoint of the quarter with a seven-yard run. That score held through the end of the quarter.
Louisville reeled off 15 straight points, starting with a safety. They continued with a 21-yard touchdown strike from Oliver to Athey, then took the lead on an eight-yard score from Oliver to Craig. Sioux Falls stopped the bleeding when Brandon Sheperd ran it in from a yard out with 3:17 left in regulation. The Xtreme attempted to counter, but Oliver's pass was intercepted by Jordan Baldwin, who returned it 23 yards for a touchdown. The Xtreme scored once more on a nine-yard pass from Oliver to Athey, but were unable to complete the comeback.
Armstrong rushed for 62 yards and a pair of touchdowns, and Chavious had 50 yards rushing to go with his score on the ground and kickoff return for a score. For the Xtreme, Oliver completed 21 of 34 passes for 237 yards with five touchdowns and a pick. Athey added 88 yards on seven receptions to his three touchdowns, and Craig had 11 catches for 132 yards and a pair of scores.
The Storm will visit the Bismarck Bucks on June 5 with a 4:05 kickoff. The Xtreme are on the road as they face the Massachusetts Pirates on June 5. Kickoff in that one is also 4:05 p.m. All times listed are pacific daylight time. Click for the SCtoC 2021 Indoor Football League schedule.
