Barnstormers 49, Bucks 42
5/29/21 --
DES MOINES, IA - A touchdown and an unorthodox call on the ensuing kickoff proved to be the difference as the Iowa Barnstormers turned back the visiting Bismarck Bucks tonight at Wells Fargo Arena.
Carrington Thompson Jr.'s 12-yard touchdown catch to the left side from Daquan Neal at the one-minute warning turned out to be the game winner, and head coach Less Moss' decision to go for the onside kick was enough of a surprise that the Barnstormers were able to recover and run out the clock. The back-and-forth 49-42 win improved Iowa's record to 2-1 on the season while Bismarck went to 3-2.
Iowa will visit Bismarck on June 12 in the second of the teams' two battles this season.
The teams turned it over on downs on each of their first possessions. The Bucks got on the board with a field goal from Cody Barber, but the Barnstormers came back with a five-yard run from Neal. Nathan Criswell's missed point after attempt made the score 6-3 at end of the first quarter.
Both teams' offenses came alive in the second quarter, starting with Justin Rankin putting the Bucks up 10-6 with a bullish 15-yard touchdown run. Bismarck recovered the ensuing kickoff, but were forced to try a 48-yard field goal from Barber which was short and wide to the right. Criswell cut into the Bucks' lead with a 23-yard field goal with 4:49 left in the quarter. J.T. Stokes' 17-yard touchdown pass from Glen Cuiellette gave the Bucks an eight-point lead a minute later. Iowa answered immediately as Neal recovered a bobbled snap in the shotgun and fired a 47-yard bomb to recently signed Kentrez Bell. With just under a minute to play in the first half, Cuiellette fired a scoring eight-yard strike to Stokes. Barber's kick went wide and the Bucks were up by a touchdown at 23-16 with 49 seconds left. Elad Covaliu rumbled 22 yards down the left side to tie the score 12 seconds later. The Bucks had a chance to take a halftime lead, but Barber's 29-yard field goal try was no good. The teams were knotted at 23-23 at the break.
The Barnstormers took the opening kickoff and drove down the field, scoring on a two-yard run from Covaliu. The Bucks responded with a 17-yard touchdown pass from Cuiellette to Raheem Harvey. After recovering a Barnstormers' fumble, Cuiellette found Harvey for a 13-yard touchdown to put the Bucks up 35-30. Iowa responded with a 15-yard pass from Neal to Connor Hollenbeck with one second remaining in the third, and the Barnstormers led 36-35 at the end of the quarter.
Cuiellette found Stokes for the third time on the evening on a 26-yard touchdown and the Bucks had a 42-36 lead four minutes into the final quarter. Hollenbeck's 17 yard pass to the right side lifted the Barnstormers to a 43-42 lead. After the teams trade fumbles, the Barnstormers took a 49-42 lead at the one minute warning on a 12-yard pass from Neal to Thompson. Iowa head coach Les Moss made a gutsy and unexpected decision to go for an onside kick. The call surprised the Bucks as well, as Hollenbeck came down with the ball, allowing the Barnstormers to run out the clock.
