WORCESTER, MA - Fire the cannons. Round two goes to the Massachusetts Pirates.
The Pirates withstood a late rally as they held off the Louisville Xtreme tonight to claim a 42-37 win tonight at the DCU Center. The Pirates won the season opener between the teams, 49-18, at Louisville on April 24.
Massachusetts moves to 3-2 with the win, while the Xtreme fell to 0-5 on the season. The teams will meet twice more in 2021; June 27 at Louisville and July 24 at Worcester.
Massachusetts led 20-17 at halftime before reeling off 13 points in the third quarter to head into the final quarter up by 16. Three Josh Gable field goals in the fourth quarter gave the Pirates a 43-23 lead with 50 seconds left. The Xtreme went on to score twice in the final 44 seconds on a pair of touchdown passes from Dalton Oliver to Harlan Craig, but they were unable to complete the comeback before time ran out.
The Pirates had a slight edge in total offense, 217 yards to 188 with a 95-21 edge on the ground. The Pirates were penalized 10 times for 48 yards, and the Xtreme were flagged five times for five times for 36 yards.
Alejandro Bennifield went 11 of 20 for 122 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. Justin Stockton had 67 yards off of 15 carries with a pair of scores, while Mardy Gilyard caught four balls for 41 yards. Thomas Owens added a pair of touchdown receptions. Santos Ramirez paced the Pirates with seven tackles, and Aarion Maxey-Penton recorded an interception.
Oliver completed 18 of 40 passes for 173 yards with four touchdowns and an interception. Craig finished with nine catches for 77 yards and a pair of touchdown grabs. Allen Edwards led the Xtreme defense with 10 tackles, and Tacorian Darden and Kyree McLean each intercepted Bennifield.
The Pirates will host the Frisco Fighters on June 12 at 4:05 p.m. The Xtreme will host the Green Bay Blizzard on June 12 for a 4:05 p.m. kickoff.
The Fighters will visit the Massachusetts Pirates on June 12 at 4:05 p.m. The Gladiators are back in action on June 12 when they head to Prescott Valley to take on the Northern Arizona Wranglers.
