WORCESTER, MA - The Frisco Fighters opened up a first half lead and held on late as they remained undefeated with a 40-33 win over the Massachusetts Pirates tonight at the DCU Center.
Frisco's win lifts them to a league-best 4-0 on the season, including a 3-0 road record. Massachusetts fell to 3-3 with the loss. The teams will meet once more this season at Frisco on July 2.
Jonathan Bane's nine-yard pass to Mark Munson put the Fighters up 6-0, but the Pirates came right back with a 35-yard bomb from Alejandro Bennifield to Thomas Owens to knot the score. Bane found Munson again for a 20-yard score before Josh Gable's 20-yard field goal made the score 13-9 in favor of the Fighters by the end of the opening quarter.
The teams traded missed field goals until Laquvionte Gonzalez caught a 14-yard touchdown from Bennifield to give the Pirates their first lead of the game at 16-13. The Fighters then scored on Demarcus Felton's 11-yard run. Frisco recovered an onside kick and went up by 11 when backup quarterback Jarrod Heardrushed in from a yard out with five seconds remaining in the opening half. Pirates kicker Josh Gable hit a 45-yard field goal to make the score 27-19 in favor of the Fighters by halftime. Gable's 45-yarder was the longest by any IFL kicker this season.
Heard, who has seen playing time this season as an alternate for Bane, rushed five yards to lift Frisco to a 33-19 lead early in the third quarter. Bennifield's six-yard pass to drew the Fighters to within a touchdown, but Felton scored on a one-yard run and the Fighters were up 40-26 after three.
The only scoring in the fourth quarter came from the Pirates on a two-yard run from Bennifield, but Massachusetts was unable to complete the comeback, ensuring Frisco of the win.
Frisco got two rushing touchdowns from Felton and Heard, as well as two receiving scores from Owens. Massachusetts was playing without its lead running back, Justin Stockton, though Gonzalez caught his first two touchdown passes of the season.
The Fighters will host the Louisville Xtreme on June 19. It's the IFL's Stadium Network Game of the Week starting at 5:05 p.m. The Pirates are back in action on June 19 as they visit the Tucson Sugar Skulls for a 6:05 p.m. kickoff.
