Rattlers 44, Sugar Skulls 34

PHOENIX, AZ - The Arizona Rattlers outscored the Tucson Sugar Skulls 14-0 in the fourth quarter to rally for a 44-34 win tonight at Phoenix Suns Arena.
In a streaky contest on both sides, it was the Rattlers who got the last word with their sprint to the finish. The Rattlers are now 5-0 all-time against the Sugar Skulls, including 3-0 at home. The teams play twice more this season; on July 3 at Tucson and on August 8 back at Phoenix. Arizona moves to 3-1 and in a share of second place with the Spokane Shock, who defeated the Sioux Falls Storm tonight, 50-32. The Sugar Skulls fall to 1-3 on the season.
Arizona jumped out to a 16-0 lead in the first quarter, starting with a 13-yard run from quarterback Drew Powell. Ricky Wyatt, Jr. gave them a safety, and they responded again with an eight-yard run from Powell.
The Sugar Skulls got on the board with a 21-yard pass from Demry Croft to Kent Shelby II. Darrell Monroe's two-yard run with 10:20 left in the second quarter put the Rattlers up 23-6, but the Sugar Skulls responded with a nine-yard run from Croft. Arizona once again extended their lead on an 11-yard pass from Powell to Jamal Miles.
Then, Tucson went on a 21-point run late in the first half through the end of the third quarter. It started with Croft's 25-yard touchdown pass to Mike Jones with 42 yards left in the second quarter. The Sugar Skulls continued their momentum with Croft's 11-yard pass to Jazeric Peterson on the opening possession of the third quarter. They took their first lead of the game, 34-30, when Jones found the end zone on a two-yard run.
It was all Rattlers in the fourth, beginning with Monroe's five-yard run. They iced the win with a one-yard run from Powell with just over four minutes left in regulation.
The Rattlers held a bit of an edge in total offense, 251 yards to 226. The Sugar Skulls were penalized six times for 45 yards and the Rattlers were flagged just once for five yards.
Powell finished 15 of 26 for 145 yards and a touchdown, while rushing for 84 yards and three scores. Miles added 47 yards off four receptions to go along with his receiving touchdown. Wyatt led the Rattlers with nine tackles and a sack, and Dillon Winfrey recorded an interception.
Croft went 12 of 20 years for 142 yards with three touchdowns and an interception. He also had 11 rushes for 61 yards and a score. Jones rushed five and 25 yards with a touchdown, and added two receptions for 40 yards and a score. Shelby caught three balls for 41 yards to go along with his touchdown. T.T. Barber and Delondo Boyd recorded 12 and 11 tackles, respectively.
