Rattlers 51, Gladiators 36
6/19/21 --
RIO RANCHO, NM - It was a tale of two halves, but the Arizona Rattlers proved to be too much for the Duke City Gladiators tonight at Rio Rancho Events Center.
Arizona, leading by a single point at halftime, held Duke City scoreless in the third quarter and outscored the Gladiators 28-14 in the second half to cruise to a 51-36 win in the first-ever meeting between the teams from neighboring states. The Rattlers' win moved them to 4-1 and in a tie with the Spokane Shock for the second-best record in the Indoor Football League. The Rattlers will host the Shock in week 10.
The teams will meet once more this season when the Gladiators visit the Rattlers on July 31. It was announced this week that Duke City will play their games at Rio Rancho due to Tingley Coliseum being used as a COVID-19 vaccination site. Rio Rancho is located approximately 30 miles north of Albuquerque, the regular home of the Gladiators.
Duke City got on the board first with a Nate Davis 13-yard touchdown pass to Xavier Amey. The two-point conversion run failed. The Rattlers came back with a two-yard run from quarterback Drew Powell. With Ernesto Lacayo's extra point, the Rattlers were up 7-6 midway through the opening quarter. The Rattlers recovered an onside kick and scored on the next play; a 38-yard touchdown bomb from Powell to Jarrod Harrington. But the Gladiators came right back with a 14-yard pass from Nate Davis to Amey. The quarterback hooked up with Dello Davis for the two-point conversion to knot the game at 14-14 by the end of the first quarter.
A four-yard pass from Powell to Miles put the Rattlers up by six, but the Gladiators took their second lead of the game with a six-yard pass from Nate Davis to Jared Elmore. Nate Davis hit a wide open Dello Davis for a two-point conversion and the Gladiators led 22-20 with 4:38 left in the half. Lacayo nailed a chip shot 20-yard field goal to put the Rattlers up 23-22 late in the half.
The Gladiators drove deep into Arizona territory inside of 30 seconds and, appeared to score with five seconds remaining. Nate Davis' pass to Dello Davis appeared to be caught in the end zone with full possession before he was forced out of the end zone by the Rattlers' defenders. Upon review, the referees upheld the no-catch saying that the receiver Davis did not complete the process of a catch even though the ball had not been juggled by Davis. The Gladiators had one more shot, but were unable to convert on fourth down and the score remained 23-22 at intermission.
This seemed to take the sail out of the Gladiators in the third quarter. and early into the fourth. Darrell Monroe rushed for a two-yard touchdown and, when Davis was intercepted by Ricky Wyatt, Jr., the Rattlers capitalized with a 13-yaerd scoring strike from Powell to Harrington and Arizona was up 37-22 going into the fourth.
Arizona got the ball back after an interception and doubled up on the Gladiators with a three-yard run from Powell. Duke City scored on a pair of touchdown passes from Davis to Davis, but by then the damage had been done.
The Rattlers will host the Spokane Shock on June 26 at 6:05 p.m. The Gladiators are back at Rio Rancho Events Center as they host the undefeated Frisco Fighters with kickoff set for 6:05 p.m. All times listed are pacific daylight time.
