Rattlers 54, Sugar Skulls 38

TUCSON, AZ - Drew Powell threw for five touchdowns and ran for another as the Arizona Rattlers put away the Tucson Sugar Skulls, 54-38, tonight at Tucson Convention Center.
Arizona moves to a league-best 6-1 with the win while Tucson fell to 1-6. The Rattlers have won five straight and the Sugar Skulls have dropped five in a row. The Rattlers won the first matchup between the teams this season, 44-34, at Phoenix on June 12. The teams meet for a third and final time this season on August 8, also in Phoenix. Dating back to the Sugar Skulls expansion season of 2019, The Rattlers have now won all six meetings between the teams.
Powell hit Jarrod Harrington on a six-yard touchdown early in the first quarter. The Sugar Skulls came back with a 51-yard field goal from Jummy Camacho on their next drive before the Rattlers countered with a one-yard run from Powell. Arizona held a 1303 lead at the end of the quarter.
Tucson scored twice in the second on a pair of touchdown strikes from Demry Croft to Ryan Balentine of 13 and eight yards and the Sugar Skulls were ahead 17-13 with 1:48 left in the quarter. The Rattlers came back with a 24-yard pass from Powell to Harrington. They added a two-yard run from Nick LaSane to put the Rattlers up at the half, 27-17.
Arizona added a touchdown early in the third when Powell found Troy Pelletier for a seven-yard touchdown. The Sugar Skulls countered with a 25-yard pass from Croft to Balentine. The Rattlers went up 40-24 with 1:09 remaining in the third quarter on a one-yard run from LaSane.
Powell hit Pelletier for a nine-yard touchdown, but Croft ran in from a yard out with 5:06 left in the fourth. Powell's eight-yard touchdown to Pelletier to put the Rattlers up 54-32. Croft's one-yard run with 23 seconds left provided for the final margin.
Powell completed 16 of 21 passes for 173 yards with five touchdowns and an interception. Harrington caught five balls for 59 yard and a pair of touchdowns. All three of Pelletier's catches went for scores. D.J. Williams led the Rattlers with eight tackles. Nikolas D'Avanzo recorded a sack and Tyrell Pearson had an interception.
Croft finished 14 of 23 for 180 yards with three touchdowns and a pick, while running for another two scores. Balentine led all receivers with seven catches for 95 yards and three touchdowns. Matt Elam paced the defense with 10 tackles, and Delvin Batiste had an interception.
The Rattlers will host the Northern Arizona Wranglers on July 10 at 6:05 p.m. The Sugar Skulls are at home on July 10 when they play host to the Duke City Gladiators with kickoff set for 6:05 p.m. All times listed are pacific daylight time.
