RIO RANCHO, NM - The Duke City Gladiators scored 21 straight points in the third and fourth quarters to pull away from the Northern Arizona Wranglers and claim a 52-38 win tonight at Rio Rancho Events Center.
Duke City moves to 3-4 on the season, while Northern Arizona falls to 1-6. The Gladiators took the first game of the season between the teams by a 34-17 margin on June 12. They play twice more this season; on July 19 at Prescott Valley and on August 7 at Rio Rancho.
The Gladiators struck first on Nate Davis' 21-yard touchdown pass to Dello Davis, but the extra point was blocked. The Wranglers took a one-point lead on Skylor Clinton's one-yard run. The Wranglers held the 7-6 lead at the end of the opening quarter.
Nate Davis and Dello Davis hooked up on a 16-yard touchdown, but the Wranglers went back up when Verlon Reed, Jr. found Terrance Bynum for a 15-yard score. Jared Elmore's three-yard touchdown midway through the second quarter. The Gladiators held an 18-14 lead at halftime.
The Wranglers cut into the lead on their first possession of the third quarter when Tim Parker converted on a 22-yard field goal and the score was 18-17. Then the Gladiators took over. They scored on Jestin Kelly's one yard run, and then on a Nate Davis 45-yard bomb to Gregory Dent, Jr. Duke City led 32-17. heading into the fourth.
The Gladiators added to the lead on Nate Davis' one-yard pass to Dello Davis a minute into the final quarter. Reed found Rob Brown for a four-yard touchdown, but Nate Davis scored on a six-yard run, putting the Gladiators up 46-24 with 8:22 remaining. Reed hit Bynum for a five-yard touchdown, but Duke City came back with a three-yard touchdown from Nate Davis to Dello Davis. Reed found Todd Athey for a one-yard touchdown which provided for the final margin of victory.
Nate Davis went 12 of 15 for 151 yards with six touchdowns and an interception, and he ran for 40 yards and another score. Four of his touchdowns went to Dello Davis, who had six catches for 57 yards. Ray Jones, Jr. had eight tackles and Lance Hyder added a sack.
Reed finished 21 of 34 for 185 yards and four touchdowns. Bynum caught five passes for 58 yards and a pair of scores, and Brown had eight catches for 53 yards and a score. Javian Williams, Jr. had four sacks and an interception for the Wranglers' defense.
