Breakdown
GLADIATORS
Duke City has had much of an up and down season. The Gladiators ended a two-game skid with a win last week over the Northern Arizona Wranglers and hope to follow that up with a win over the Sugar Skulls this week. The team announced on July 7 that they have hired a new coach in Robert Kent, who played with the team while it was with in their previous league, Champions Indoor Football. Kent, who replaced Martino Theus, actually coached the Gladiators to their win last week on July 3. Nate Davis leads the IFL with 39 touchdown tosses. He is completing 62 percent of his passes for 182.7 yards per game, and also has three touchdowns on the ground. The Gladiators have not featured much of a ground game, so Kent will look to correct that. Dello Davis' 17 touchdown receptions lead the IFL. Xavier Amey and Jared Elmore have combined for another 16 scores. Ray Jones, Jr. and Paul Robinson lead the defense with 43 and 38 tackles, respectively, and Robinson has five pass breakups. Javian Williams comes in with a pair of sacks.
SUGAR SKULLS
Tucson has dropped six straight and is seeing distance between its current 1-6 record and a bid for a playoff spot grow on a weekly basis. A win against the Gladiators could point the Sugar Skulls in the right direction. It will take some doing, however, as the Gladiators are coming off their win over the Fighters, ending Frisco's unbeaten run to start the season. The Sugar Skulls have loads of talent on the roster. It's just a matter of putting it all together. Demry Croft has started each of Tucson's seven games. His 22 passing touchdowns are second only to Nate Davis' 39. Croft is completing 61 percent of his passes for 1,256 yards, and is rushing for nearly 48 yards per game with 10 touchdowns on the ground. Mike Jones is a solid rusher whom the Sugar Skulls use to make defenses honest. Jones also has 22 catches and three touchdowns out of the backfield. Ryan Balentine, the IFL's all-time receiver in rushing yards, has 422 yards and eight scoring catches. Delondo Boyd has 40 tackles, Matt Elam has 39, and Michael Minter has two picks.
