Fighters 42, Barnstormers 35
7/9/21 --
FRISCO, TX - It wasn't pretty, but the Frisco Fighters got back on the winning track as they came back to take down the Iowa Barnstormers tonight at the Comercia Center tonight.
The Fighters' slim 42-35 win at home improves their record to 6-1 and in a tie Arizona Rattlers (ahead tomorrow's Rattlers' game at home against the Northern Arizona Wranglers) atop the Indoor Football League standings. The Barnstormers go to 4-4 on the season. They have now lost two straight on the road. This was the only meeting between the Barnstormers and Fighters this season.
The Barnstormers got on the board on the first drive of the game when Daquan Neal rushed in from a yard out. The Fighters scored on a 22-yard field goal with 4:17 left in the opening quarter. The Barnstormers were up 7-3 at the end of the opening quarter.
Iowa added to its lead on Carrington Thompson, Sr.'s 29-yard touchdown reception from Neal, but Frisco struck back with a seven-yard run from Demarcus Felton with 3:49 left in the second. The Barnstormers went back up by 11 two minutes later with a two-yard pass from Neal to Daylon Person. The Fighters cut the lead to 21-17 with 13 seconds remaining on a one-yard pass from Jonathan Bane to Manny Arceneaux. That score remained through the half.
Frisco took its first lead of the game on Felton's four-yard run early in the third quarter, but Iowa countered with a scoring run from Neal. The Barnstormers led 28-23 heading into the final quarter.
The Fighters went back up by two points on a seven-yard pass from Jonathan Bane at the six-minute mark of the fourth. Neal's touchdown pass to Person gave the Barnstormers a 35-30 lead four minutes later. It came down to Fighters head coach Clint Dolezel to manage the clock with two minutes left. He did it masterfully. Frisco was able to run off the clock until backup quarterback Jerrod Heard essentially walked into the end zone with seven seconds left. Heard's touchdown was the game clincher. The Barnstormers tried a long field goal, but it was blocked and returned for a touchdown by the Fighters to provide for the extra score.
The Fighters will visit the Bismarck Bucks on July 16 with a 4:05 p.m. start time. The Barnstormers were initially scheduled to play the Louisville Xtreme on July 17, but the IFL terminated the Xtreme's membership after they played five games. Iowa will host the Green Bay Blizzard on July 24 with kickoff set for 5:05 p.m. All times listed are pacific daylight time. Click for the complete SCtoC 2021 Indoor Football League schedule.
