Breakdown
PIRATES
Massachusetts is in prime position to host a playoff game in the first round. The Pirates are currently third in the standings with an opportunity to move up a position or two higher before season's end. That's doable. They have to win their four remaining games which come against the Shock and then teams whose current records are at .500 or below. If the Pirates win out, and the Arizona Rattlers and Frisco Fighters each lose a game (they play each other in teh season finale), Massachusetts would ascend to first in the standings by way of a tiebreaker over the Rattlers due to their week 13. Alejandro Bennifield has been the quarterback for most of the season. He is second in the league with 30 passing touchdowns. He also has 13 rushing scores. Justin Stockton is a tough rusher with 41.9 yards per game and five touchdowns. Thomas Owens is the top receiver in the IFL with 50 catches with a 71.0-yard average and 16 touchdowns. The Pirates defense is led by Santos Ramirez with 55 tackles. Da’Sean Downey has 3.5 sacks and Aarion Maxey-Penton comes in with three sacks.
SHOCK
Spokane is looking to bounce back after last week's loss to the Tucson Sugar Skulls. Currently in fourth place, the Shock would open the playoffs with a home contest. The difficulty is that their remaining three games come against the three teams which are above them in the standings (the Pirates, Fighters and Rattlers). Four teams are all .500 and could find opportunity in the Shock's predicament and take advantage with a playoff run of their own. Blake Sims has started in place of the injured Charles McCullum. Sims is 2-1 as a starter and has been effective, especially in the running game where he averages 49 yards per game with six scores in just three contests. Davonte Sapp-Lynch is the workhorse rusher with 37.5 yards per game and 10 touchdowns. Kamrin Solomon, Troy Evans, Jr. and Jordan Jolly comprise a solid receiving corps which was enhanced by the addition of Keyvan Rudd three weeks ago. Expect to see Mike Green all over the field on defense as he leads the Shock with 49 tackles. Ameris Bailey has a trio of sacks and Dominic Sanders has eight pass breakups.
