SIOUX FALLS, SD - The Frisco Fighters kept hold, for now, the second seed in the Indoor Football League playoff race tonight with a 37-33 win over the Sioux Falls Storm tonight at Denny Sanford Premier Center.
Frisco's win elevates it to a 8-2 record on the season, just a half game back of the 9-2 Arizona Rattlers. Each team has three games remaining, including a matchup against one another in the season finale on August 21. Tonight's game between the Fighters and Storm was the first-ever meeting and only game between the teams this year. Sioux Falls fell to 5-6 on the season with the loss.
The Fighters struck first on a one-yard run from Jerrod Heard. Lorenzo Brown, Jr. put the Storm on the board with a two-yard run. Parker Douglass' point after try was blocked by the Fighters' Tyrell Thompson and returned for a defensive PAT to put the Fighters up 9-6. The Storm took their first lead of the game on a 38-yard pass from Brown to Tre King. The Storm led 12-9 at the end of the opening quarter.
Frisco knotted the game at 12-12 on Kristov Martinez's 49-yard field goal two-and-a-half minutes into the second quarter. Brown responded on the next play with a four-yard touchdown pass to Brandon Sheperd. Heard's 10-yard rush for Frisco tied the game at 19-19 before Brown found Sheperd for a 11-yard score. Martinez hit a 29-yard field goal as time expired to narrow the Storm's lead to 26-22 as time expired in the half.
The Fighters took over in the second half, first scoring on an eight-yard run from Demarcus Felton. It was the only score of the third quarter and put the Fighters up 28-26 by the end of the quarter. Heard scored his third rushing touchdown of the game, a three-yarder, two minutes into the fourth. to extend the lead to 35-33. Nate Chavious pulled the Storm back to within two points when he returned the ensuing kickoff 50 yards for a score. Brown was called for intentional grounding in the end zone for a safety to provide for the final margin of 37-33.
Malik Henry, filling in for starter Jonathan Bane, finished10 of 13 for 110 yards with an interception. Heard added 36 yards off nine carries to his three scores on the ground. Mark Munson led the Fighters in receiving with a pair of catches for 44 yards. For the Storm, Brown finished seven of 13 for 120 yards and three scores. Chavious rushed 11 times for 78 yards, and Sheperd had three catches for 41 yards and two touchdowns.
The Fighters will host the Spokane Shock on August 7 in the IFL Stadium Game of the Week. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m. The Shock have a bye in week 16, but are back in action on August 14 when they visit the Iowa Barnstormers for a 5:05 p.m. kickoff.
