SPOKANE, WA - Alejandro Bennifield's 10-yard run in the second overtime proved to be the deciding factor for the Massachusetts Pirates as they claimed a 63-57 win over the Spokane Shock tonight at Spokane Veterans Memorial Arena.
The Pirates move into third place in the IFL standings with the win at 8-3, while the Shock dropped into fourth at 6-4. The teams met earlier this season in Worcester with the Shock coming back in the second half to claim a 34-26 win.
The teams traded field goals early in the opening quarter; a 40 yarder from Spokane's Sawyer Petre and a 50-yarder from Massachusetts' Octayvius Miles. The Pirates scored three straight times from there. The first score came on a fumble recovery in the end zone from Martrell Spaight. Laquvionte Gonzalez's seven-yard touchdown pass from Bennifield put the Pirates up 17-3 with 4:32 left in the first quarter.
Gonzalez scored again on a four-yard rush early in the second quarter. Marcus McDade tossed an 18 yard touchdown pass to Troy Evans, Jr. to pull the Shock to within 24-10, and Petre added a 15-yard field goal in the quarter. Bennifield hit Darron Carrington for a 21-yard touchdown before Spokane made the score 31-20 on a three-yard run from Kamrin Solomon. The Pirates had just enough time to score one last time; an 11-yard touchdown from Bennifield to Thomas Owens. The Pirates led 38-20 at the break.
They added to that lead early in the third on Miles' 30-yard field goal. McDade found Evans for a 14-yard score to narrow the deficit to two touchdowns. Marquis Young rushed in from five yards to extend the Pirates' lead to 47-27 by the end of the third quarter.
Miles made the score 50-27 with a 25-yard field goal midway through the fourth. Spokane then went on a 23-point run. McDade fired a 45-yard touchdown to Keyvan Rudd with just over six minutes left. Rudd scored with under a minute to go on a three-yard run. McDade's two-point conversion run made the score 50-42 at with 54 seconds remaining. After recovering the onside kick, The Shock scored on a one-yard run from McDade. The two-point conversion try was no good, leaving it up to Sawyer Petre to attempt a deuce. Petre's kickoff went right through the uprights and the score was knotted at 50-50, sending the game into overtime.
Bennifield hit Owens on a 10-yard pass in the first overtime, but the Shock tied it at 57-57 on McDade's eight-yard touchdown to Evans. That set up the second overtime with the Shock having the ball first. With the ball at the Pirates' one-yard line, J.D. Griggs forced a McDade fumble which his team recovered, setting up Bennifield's 10-yard game-winning score.
Bennifield finished nine of 16 for 113 yards with four touchdowns and an interception. Dontez Byrdcaught five passes for 61 yards, and Owens caught a pair of touchdowns. Spaight recorded nine tackles, and Santos Ramirez had eight tackles and an interception. Harlan Miller had to picks for the Pirates defense.
McDade, starting his first game for the Shock, went 15 of 30 for 200 yards with four touchdowns and three picks. Rudd caught three passes for 82 yards and a score, while Evans has four catches for 56 yards and three touchdowns. Mike Green led the Shock with seven tackles, and Dominic Sanders had six tackles and an interception.
The Pirates will host the Green Bay Blizzard on August 7 at 4:05 p.m. The Shock will visit the Frisco Fighters on August 7 in the IFL Game of the Week on Stadium.
