Pirates 51, Wranglers 16
8/14/21 --
PRESCOTT VALLEY, AZ - It took a quarter to awaken, but the Massachusetts Pirates outscored the Northern Arizona Wranglers 44-7 in the final three quarters to secure a 51-16 win tonight at Findlay Toyota Center.
The Pirates move to 10-3 on the season and 10-3 on the season, while the Wranglers drop to 1-12 in their inaugural season. This is the first-ever meeting and the only meeting between the teams this season.
The Pirates' mission is simple. If they win today and next week, they will finish as the number seed regardless of the outcome of the season finale game next week between the Frisco Fighters and Arizona Rattlers. That would mean home field advantage through the semifinal round. A loss next week for the Pirates and they would drop to the number three seed.
The Wranglers scored on the opening drive of the game on a two-yard run from Verlon Reed, Jr. After Laquvionte Gonzalez returned the ensuing kickoff to the Wranglers' six yard line, he scored on a two-yard pass from Sean Brackett. Ali Moutada's point-after attempt was blocked and returned by the Wranglers' Cam Pruitt for a defensive two-point conversion. Northern Arizona led 9-6 at the end of the first quarter.
Massachusetts tied the game on a 36-yard field goal less than a minute into the second quarter. Chucky Williams intercepted Reed and the Pirates capitalized on a six-yard run from Gonzalez. Marquis Young's one-yard touchdown around the left side gave the Pirates a 23-9 lead with 2:03 left in the first half.
The Pirates extended their lead to 30-9 on a touchdown pass from Brackett to Dontez Byrd seven minutes into the third quarter. Aarion Maxey-Penton returned the ensuing kickoff 54 yards to put the Pirates up 37-9.
The Wranglers got on the board for the first time since the first quarter on Caden Walters' one-yard scamper. The Pirates scored on a five-yard pass from Brackett to Thomas Owens. The Pirates scored again on a four-yard pass from Brackett to Gonzalez to take a 44-16 lead. Brackett's 45 yard scoring bomb to Gonzalez closed out the scoring, providing for the final margin.
Brackett, filling in for the Pirates' starter Alejandro Bennifield, tossed four touchdowns for the Pirates. Gonzalez scored three times; two receptions and a run.
The Pirates' regular season finale has them at home to host the Iowa Barnstormers on August 21 at 4:05 p.m. The Wranglers end their inaugural season at home to battle the Tucson Sugar Skulls on August 21 at 6:05 p.m. All times listed are pacific daylight time.
