Welcome to the SCtoC Portland Trail Blazers 2021-22 News Tracker. During the course of the Blazers 52nd season, we will post all major news regarding the team. This will include, but not be limited to, player movement, scheduling, standout game performances and major news. Posts will appear below in descending order with the most recent news on top.
News Tracker
September 21, 2021 - Portland signs free agent point guard Quinn Cook to a non-guaranteed contract. Cook, 6'1", holds career averages of 6.4 points and 1.6 assists over a five-year career with five different NBA teams; most recently the Cleveland Cavaliers toward the later portion of last season.
September 2, 2021 - The Blazers announce they have signed free agent guard Dennis Smith, Jr. to a training camp roster. Smith averaged 15.9 points and 5.2 assists with the Dallas Mavericks in his 2017-2018 rookie season. The team traded him to the New York Knicks the following off season, but he never quite found his footing there. He split time with the Knicks and Detroit Pistons last season.
August 28, 2021 - The Blazers acquire 6'7" forward Larry Nance, Jr. in a three-team trade. Portland gets Nance by sending forward Derrick Jones, Jr. a protected first-round pick and a protected second-round pick to the Chicago Bulls. Chicago sends center Lauri Markkanen to the Cleveland Cavaliers (Nance's previous team). Nance, entering his seventh NBA season, averaged 9.3 points, 6.7 rebounds, 3.1 assists, 1.74 steals and 31.2 minutes in 35 games (27 starts) for the Cavaliers in 2020-21.
August 17, 2021 - Kevin Calabro will be back as the Blazers television broadcasts after taking a break the past two seasons. He will be re-joined by analyst Lamar Hurd.
August 17, 2021 - The Blazers announce their four-game preseason schedule with a pair of home games and another two on the road. That schedule appears below:
Oct. 4 - vs. Golden St. Warriors, 7 p.m.
Oct. 11 - vs. Sacramento Kings, 7 p.m.
Oct. 13 - at Phoenix Suns, 6 p.m.
Oct. 15 - at Golden St. Warriors, 7:30 p.m.
August 17, 2021 - It is announced that Blazers games will be aired on the cable broadcast network ROOT Sports after a long run on NBC Sports Northwest. The move to ROOT Sports is an announced as an outreach to not only Oregon, but Washington and Alaska.
August 17, 2021 - The Blazers finish Las Vegas Summer League with a 2-3 record, with their wins coming over the Charlotte Hornets and Los Angeles Clippers. They won their first two games and dropped their final three.
August 14, 2021 - The Blazers officially sign Greg Brown III to a three-year rookie contract.
August 13, 2021 - As was announced as an intention the previous week, center Enes Kanter signs a free agent deal with the Boston Celtics. Kanter's recent NBA history is interesting as he was originally signed by the Blazers mid-season in 2018-19. He then signed with the Celtics for the following year, but traded back to the Blazers during the 2020 offseason. Kanter entered the Blazers' record books with a franchise-high 30 rebounds in a single game during a 118-105 win over the Detroit Pistons on April 10, 2021. He also scored 24 points in the win.
August 11, 2021 - Forward/center Zach Collins signs a free agent contract for three years with the San Antonio Spurs. Collins, drafted by the Blazers in 2017 when they traded the 15th and 20th picks for his right, had spent much of his four seasons with the Blazers on injured reserve. He played just six games with the team in 2020-21.
August 6, 2011 - Veteran forward Carmelo Anthony signs a free agent deal with the Los Angeles Lakers. Anthony, who played nearly two seasons with the Blazers, is a 10-time all-star who is searching for an NBA title as he joins LeBron James with the Lakers.
August 6, 2011 - The Blazers re-sign 6'4" guard Norman Powell to a five-year, 90 million dollar contract. Powell had been acquired by the Blazers in a mid-season trade with the Toronto Raptors in exchange for Gary Trent, Jr. and Rodney Hood. Powell is pictured below.
August 5, 2021 - Free agent guard Ben McLemore signs a one-year free agent contract with the Blazers. The 6'3" guard joins the Blazers after a half-season with the Los Angeles Lakers. He has a 8.9 career scoring average and has shot 36.3 percent from beyond the arc. McLemore was the seventh overall selection in the 2013 NBA Draft.
August 4, 2021 - Cody Zeller officially signs his one-year contract with the Trail Blazers. He will be expected to back up Jusuf Nurkic, as well as play spot minutes along side Nurkic.
August 3, 2021 - Free agent veteran forward Tony Snell agrees to a one-year contract with the Blazers. Snell has hit on 39.7 percent of his three-point attempts over his career. Snell is 6'7" and played for the University of New Mexico.
August 3, 2021 - The Blazers announce they have signed undrafted rookie free agent forward Trendon Watford to a two-way (NBA/G-League) contract. Watford is 6'9", 240 pounds and played college ball at LSU for two seasons; averaging 14.9 points and 7.3 rebounds per game during that span.
August 2, 2021 - As the NBA's free agency period begins, it is reported that the Blazers have agreed to a one-year contract with seven-foot center Cody Zeller. He had spent all eight of his previous seasons with the Charlotte Bobcats/Hornets after being drafted fourth overall by that team.
July 29, 2021 - While the Blazers did not have a pick in the 2021 NBA Draft, they acquire the rights to Greg Brown III, the number 43 pick, from the New Orleans Pelicans in exchange for a future second round pick and cash considerations, Brown is a 19-year-old, 6'8" forward who played at the University of Texas at Austin for a year.
June 28, 2021 - After a coaching search which included former NBA head coach Mike D'Antoni and San Antonio Spurs assistant coach Becky Hammon, the Blazers hire former NBA player Chauncey Billups as their new head coach. Billups previously was an assistant coach for the Los Angeles Clippers for one season.
June 4, 2021 - A day following the Blazers first round playoff exit, the team fires head coach Terry Stotts. He had been head coach since 2013 and had amassed a 402-318 record as head coach of the team. Stotts came in the same offseason that the team drafted Damian Lillard. He had previously coached the Milwaukee Bucks and Atlanta Hawks.
