This is the 2021-22 Regular Season schedule for the Spokane Chiefs.
The Chiefs are entering their 37th Season as members of the Western Hockey League. Spokane plays in the U.S. Division of the WHL's Western Conference. The U.S. Division features the 5 teams from the United States and, in addition to Spokane, consists of the Everett Silvertips, Portland Winterhawks, Seattle Thunderbirds, and Tri-City Americans.
Spokane is coming off of an abbreviated 2020-21 campaign that was affected by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The 24-game schedule was restricted to only opponents within the U.S. Division and no fans were allowed in attendance at most of the venues. The Chiefs took the season to build up its youth after a highly successful (and cut short) 2019-20 campaign in which they went 41-18-4-1. Last season, the Chiefs finished near the bottom of the U.S. Division with a 6-10-4-1 record, with three games cancelled due to a COVID outbreak amongst Tri-City's locker room.
The 2021-22 season will see some resumption of normalcy, with the league going back to the full 68-game season (34 home/34 away). However, Spokane will not be seeing any of the Eastern Conference teams this season, playing exclusively among U.S. Division opponents and opponents of the B.C. Division, including the Kamloops Blazers, Kelowna Rockets, Prince George Cougars, Vancouver Giants, and Victoria Royals.
For the first time since the 2018-19 season, Spokane will see its head coach return behind the bench in second year HC Adam Maglio, who looks to learn from the growing pains of the pandemic shortened season and turn the team into a contender.
The Chiefs open their 2021-2022 campaign at home against the Tri-City Americans on Saturday, October 2nd on Bud Light Opening Night.
In addition to Bud Light Opening Night, popular promotions of past years will be return, including the annual Leinenkugel's Hocktoberfest event and the annual Teddy Bear Toss. Future popular promotional games, such as Coca-Cola Bobblehead Night and Numerica Piggy Bank Night, are planned but are not definitely set at this time.
The annual Teddy Bear Toss, presented by the Spokesman-Review Christmas Fund, will take place on December 4 against Seattle. Fans are encouraged to bring a teddy bear to throw on the ice after the Chiefs score their first goal. All bears and stuff animals will then be donated to the Spokesman-Review's Christmas Fund.

October/November Update: To say that the 2021-22 Spokane Chiefs have seen their share of struggles is an understatement.
After a promising 3-2 lead in the season opener against the Tri-City Americans, Spokane allowed three unanswered goals to fall 5-3 to begin the season. The Chiefs would see the rough streak continue the following night, allowing two first period goals to trail against the Everett Silvertips 2-0. Spokane would tie it up, but would give up a goal four minutes later. A late game push to send the game into overtime brought encouragement, but ultimately Spokane would fall in OT by a score of 4-3.
The rest of October would be a struggle, as Spokane could only muster 3 wins (all against Tri-City) but would lose early against the rest of their U.S. Division foes, going 0-2 against Everett, 0-3 against the Seattle Thunderbirds, and 0-1 against the Portland Winterhawks to finish October with a 3-6-1-0 record.
The struggles against the U.S. Division would continue going into November, as Spokane would not only lose back-to-back home games against Everett, but counting their last game in October, would lose 3-straight home games to the Silvertips, being outscored 11-6.
The following week, Spokane was due to play three on the road, including two in Canada for the first time since 2020 against the Victoria Royals. However, positive COVID-19 cases in the Chiefs locker room halted any team activities, and all three games were postponed to be made up later -- the Victoria games are scheduled for January 11 and 12, and the Everett game scheduled for March 11.
After a long break, the Chiefs would return to action in mid-November, dropping games to both Seattle and Everett. Needing a break from U.S. Division foes, Spokane managed to break their 6 game slide against the Kelowna Rockets. The Chiefs would fall in a shootout to the Rockets in Kelowna, followed by a heartbreaking home loss to Vancouver the following week. However, the good vibes returned as Spokane defeated Victoria 6-5 in an Overtime thriller.
Spokane's struggles didn't do them any favors in the standings, as the Chiefs sit in 4th Place in the U.S. Division with a 5-10-2-1 record (13 points). Everett sits in 1st place, running away with the division by feasting on U.S. Division teams with a 16-1-1-1 record (34 points), followed by Seattle (13-6-1-0, 27 points) and then a ten point gap with third place Portland (7-10-2-1, 17 points). Tri-City, sits in last with a 4-11-2-0 record, but with 10 points, 3 points back of Spokane.
The good news for Spokane is that the team currently occupies the #8 seed in the Western Conference Standings. While Everett feasted on the U.S. Division to climb to the top of the standings, they are tied with the Kamloops Blazers (17-2-0-0, 34 points) for first in the conference.
December features one B.C. Division team (Prince George) coming to town on December 3rd, but Spokane will have to buck the trend as 10 of their next 11 games will be U.S. Division opponents, including 4 straight vs Portland over the course of a week.

MONTHLY UPDATE: December got off to a rough start for the Chiefs, beginning with a 9-2 loss to the Everett Silvertips, who have gloated about their dominance over the U.S. Division for the last two seasons. Spokane would bounce back with an early advantage on the Prince George Cougars, but would ultimately lose that game 4-2.
However, Spokane would earn its first victory over a U.S. Division team on December 4th, charged by the team's annual Teddy Bear Toss game with a 3-2 overtime victory over the Seattle Thunderbirds.
Spokane would then come back the next week with four straight against the Portland Winterhawks, two in Portland and two in Spokane, to which Spokane would go 1-3 in that series, followed by yet another blowout to Everett. The Chiefs would start bouncing back after the Christmas break, winning two of three against Seattle and the Tri-City Americans.
Entering the 2022 portion of the schedule, Spokane has slipped into 5th place in the U.S. Division with a 9-17-2-1 record (21 points). First place Everett (23-6-2-1, 49 points) is running away with the division, but Seattle (19-9-3-0, 41 points) is keeping pace with their I-5 rival. Portland sits comfortably in third place (15-11-3-1, 34 points) while Tri-City has squeaked a lead over Spokane, but by one point (9-15-4-0, 22 points).
Spokane has also seen its standing in the Western Conference fall into last place (10th place). Tri-City is the closest team that they can swap positions with, but trail the 8th Place Victoria Royals (12-13-4-0, 28 points) by 7 games. The playoffs look to be unrealistic, but if Spokane can figure out how to piece some wins together, they could aim to climb back into the race by pursuing the Royals for the last playoff berth. Time will tell.
