Winterhawks 2021-22 Schedule

This is the 2021-22 Regular Season schedule for the Portland Winterhawks.

The Winterhawks are entering their 46th Season as members of the Western Hockey League. Portland plays in the U.S. Division of the WHL's Western Conference. The U.S. Division features the 5 teams from the United States and, in addition to Portland, consists of the Everett Silvertips, Spokane Chiefs, Seattle Thunderbirds, and Tri-City Americans.

Portland is coming off of an abbreviated 2020-21 campaign that was affected by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The 24-game schedule was restricted to only opponents within the U.S. Division and no fans were allowed in attendance at most of the venues. The Winterhawks finished the abbreviated 2020-21 season in second place in the division with a mark of 13-8-3 with 96 goals for and 72 goals against. No playoffs were held in either 2020 nor 2021 due to the pandemic.

The 2021-22 season will see some resumption of normalcy, with the league going back to the full 68-game season (34 home/34 away). However, Portland will not be seeing any of the Eastern Conference teams this season, playing exclusively among U.S. Division opponents and opponents of the B.C. Division, including the Kamloops Blazers, Kelowna Rockets, Prince George Cougars, Vancouver Giants, and Victoria Royals.

Mike Johnston returns as the head coach and general manager of the Winterhawks for his 12 season (non-consecutive). He has a 684-418-221 overall regular season head coaching record with the team. The roster consists primarily of players from the United States and Canada, as well as three players from Europe.

The Winterhawks open the 2021-22 season with visit to Tri-City on October 1 and their home opener is the next night against Seattle. The close out the season on April 2 against Seattle.

EARLY SEASON UPDATE: The Winterhawks have had a rough start to their 2021-22 season, but there have been some highlights. Through the first two months of the season, the 'Hawks stand at 7-10 on the season with a pair of overtime losses and a shootout loss added to that. The team has earned 17 points which puts it in sixth place in the Western Hockey League standings. By laymen's terms, that's a 7-13 overall record. Of those games, the Winterhawks are 4-7 at home and 3-6 away.

Portland finished October at 4-6 with a 2-4 mark at home, while splitting their road contests, 2-2. It was a streaky month as the Winterhawks dropped their first three before evening out their record with three straight wins. November found the Winterhawks with less successful results, finishing the month at 3-7 with a 2-3 record at home and 1-4 away. The month featured a four-game, 11-day losing streak in the early to mid part of the month. They responded with two straight wins at home before falling in their last two of the month.

The Kamloops Blazers and Everett Silvertips lead the Western Conference of the WHL with 34 points. Three other teams seem to be battling for third place with point ranges spanning 21-25. The Winterhawks stand in sixth place with 17 points. The top team in the league is the Eastern Conference's Winnipeg ICE, which completed November with a league-high 43 points with a 21-1 record with another loss by overtime.

Fans at Veterans Memorial Coliseum donated 7,531 teddy bears and other stuffed animals during last night's Winterhawks' 7-3 win over Spokane. The Annual Teddy Bear Toss came 7:17 into the first period after the Winterhawks' Robbie Fromm-Delorme secured a loose puck from behind the Chief's net, brought it around and put it into the net.

MONTHLY UPDATE: December turned out to be a terrific month for the Winterhawks. They went 7-1 with the addition of an overtime loss. That was good for 15 points in the standings. They were 6-1 (in addition to the loss in OT) at home and 1-1 on the road. One away game at Tri-City was postponed due to COVID-19 protocols. There were a couple of noticeable highlights; notably the 7,531 stuffed animals collected during the annual Teddy Bear Toss. That occurred in the first period of the Winterhawks' 7-3 win over the Spokane Chiefs on December 11. The other was Portland's nine-goal performance in a 9-2 win over Tri-City on December 28.

Portland is currently 15-11 with three OT losses and a shootout loss resulting in 34 points. The Winterhawks are third in the U.S. Division behind the Everett Silvertips (49 points; 23-6-2-1) and the Seattle Thunderbirds (41 points; 19-9-3-0). The Winterhawks are fourth in the Western Conference and 10th overall in the Western Hockey League standings entering January.

The Winterhawks open January right away with a trip to face Everett on New Year's Day in the first of four road games. In all, they play six at home and seven on the road during the month as they look to continue the momentum from December.

This Portland Winterhawks schedule has been updated due to team activities being paused due to COVID-19.

The January 7 game at Kamloops has been postponed. It is the second game to be canceled this season. The first to be postponed was the game at Tri-City on December 29.

Make up dates for either game have yet to be announced.
