Aloha SCtoC, Spiderfan, the official the NFL analyst for SCtoC here back with another edition of Web of Football. Hope everyone had a fun and safe Christmas and so without further ado, let us begin!
In Defense of Baker Mayfield
Yes, the Browns lost and yes, Browns QB Baker Mayfield threw 4 interceptions. HOWEVER, the Browns loss to the Packers is not his fault, at least in my opinion. I say that because 3 of the interceptions were not his fault. One was because WR Jarvis Landry fell down, and 2 of them were because of missed defensive penalties and therefore shouldn't have counted. He did have one ugly interception in the red zone, to be fair.
After the season, the Browns will probably trade Mayfield and I actually don't blame them. Not because Mayfield himself is a scrub, but because the Browns offense does not fit his skill set. Mayfield is a pocket passer who reads defenses and throws the ball 40 times a game. That is the kind of scheme he ran when he played in college and even his rookie year when he was at his best in the NFL. As currently constructed, the Browns offensively are like the Ravens except instead of Lamar Jackson type running their run based offense, their QB is a Drew Brees type. It is square peg in a round hole. That is why Baker Mayfield has been put in a position to fail. That is why a game like the Christmas Day game against the Packers should not be used as anti-Mayfield confirmation bias.
Fire Matt Rhule
Setting aside the poor on field product, the unproductive QB carousel, Rhule's lack of qualifications to become a NFL head coach in the first place. At least Urban Meyer had national championships and had produced NFL players, Rhule's whole shtick was to be a "program builder" AKA one of those guys who has a bad record, but has one good to great season that convinces another school to pay him more money, or his unpopularity with the Panthers fanbase for a second This quote should be why Matt Rhule should be fired as the Panthers HC:
Not only is the quote in and of itself contradictory, as a NFL owner I would NEVER want to my HC or GM EVER say something like "Yeah, we are good, you just can't tell." You should be able to tell even a little bit. If you can't tell that the team is improving and/or good get the heck out.
Some belated Christmas Cheer
-Congrats to the Arizona Cardinals for clinching their first playoff appearance since 2015!
-Congrats to the Dallas Cowboys for winning the NFC East!
-Congrats to the Tommy Bay Buccaneers for winning the NFC South!
-Congrats to the Kansas City Chiefs for winning the AFC West!
-Congrats to the Los Angles Rams for clinching a playoff spot!
-To everyone who is now out of the playoff hunt, there is always next year!
-To everyone who still has a shot at the making the playoffs, good luck!
Other thoughts:
-In Coach O voice: Joe Burreaux is good quarterback. He make good plays wit da ball, he make other team look bad. Geaux Tigers!
-Even though he doesn't call plays, watch for Browns OC Alex Van Pelt as a HC candidate. Aaron Rodgers views him very highly, and it won't surprise me if someone hires him as a way to please Rodgers.
-I look forward to breaking down the final scenarios and whatnot next week for all the teams still in the playoff hunt because by next week, we'll have a clear picture of all the scenarios.
As always I hope ya enjoyed and I hope to see ya in the new year! This is spiderfan out.
