Bismarck Bucks 26, Green Bay Blizzard 23
3/13/21 --
GREEN BAY WI - Call it five in a row.
The Bismarck Bucks trotted into Green Bay, took a nine-point fourth quarter lead, and held on to earn a 26-23 win over the Blizzard to open the 2022 season for both teams. Combined with the Bucks' four-game sweep over the Blizzard last year, Bismarck has won five straight over Green Bay.
The teams play twice more this season with both games being in Bismarck. The first comes in just two weeks as the Blizzard visit North Dakota's capital on March 27. They also meet up on May 7.
Dejour Nesbeth intercepted the Bucks' Tahj Tolbert on the opening drive of the game. Green Bay capitalized with a 22 yard touchdown pass from Torrance Gibson to Dez Stewart to take a 7-0 lead less than five minutes into the game. Bismarck answered on Tolbert's 11 strike to John Brunner across the middle. The Bucks got the ball right back after recovering a Blizzard fumble, resulting in a first and goal inside the 10.
The Blizzard took a 10-7 lead with just over six minutes gone in the second quarter on a 33-yard field goal from Nick Jaworski. The Bucks took their first lead of the game with just over five minutes to play when Tolbert found Brunner for a 10-yard score over the middle. The Bucks added a field goal from Chase Allbaugh as time expired to give the Bucks a 16-10 halftime lead.
Bismarck went up 23-10 on a long strike from Tolbert to Rob Brown with 3:22 left in the third quarter. Brown and his twin brother, Robert, are IFL veterans who have played with the Spokane Empire and Northern Arizona Wranglers among other teams. Gibson hit Stewart for a 13-yard touchdown to the back of the end zone to make it a one-score game two minutes later. The Bucks lead was 23-17 heading into the final quarter.
Allbaugh extended the Bucks lead to 26-17 with a 31-yard field goal with just over nine minutes remaining. Green Bay struggled to get something going until their last drive in which Gibson hit Stewart in the middle of the end zone for nine yards as time expired.
The Bucks will host the Sioux Falls Storm on March 19 at 5:05 p.m. Following a bye, the Blizzard will visit these same Bucks on March 27 at 1:05 p.m. All times mentioned are pacific time. Click for our SCtoC 2021 Indoor Football League schedule.
