Sioux Falls Storm 35, Quad City Steamwheelers 24
3/13/21 --
SIOUX FALLS, SD - It may have not been by design, but the Sioux Falls Storm got the job done in their season opener.
The Storm pulled away from the Quad City Steamwheelers late in route to a 35-34 win tonight at the Denny Sanford Premier Center. Sioux Falls is looking to regain their championship form after earning just the eighth seed in last year's playoffs. Quad City was playing its first game since 2020; they were one of only two teams to record wins that year before the IFL season was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. They went dormant for 2021 due to restrictions in their home state of Illinois as to arena capacity.
The teams meet twice more this season; both at Quad City. The Storm visit the Steamwheelers on April 8 and on May 28
Sioux Falls scored first, courtesy a 29-yard field goal from newly acquired Sawyer Petre. Quad City responded with a 27-yard field goal from Kimo Naehu to knot the game at 3-3 with 4:41 remaining in the first quarter.
The Storm went up early in the second quarter on Nate Chavious' four-yard run. With the Storm driving in Quad City territory, Tasleem Wilson's pass was intercepted by Darreon Jackson who returned it 50 yards to narrow the deficit to 10-9. Sioux Falls scored on a five-yard touchdown toss from Wilson to Aaron Dilworth. Sawyer Petre followed that with a successful deuce to give the Storm a 19-9 lead heading into the half.
Quad City cut into the lead with a nine-yard touchdown pass from David Perkins to Keyvan Rudd midway through the third quarter, before the Storm scored on a one-yard run from Bryson Denley. The Storm led 25-15 at the end of three.
The Steamwheelers pulled to within a touchdown on on Naehu's 29-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter. The Storm once again went up by double digits on a Petre 20-yarder. A fumble on a bad snap by the Steamwheelers was recovered by the Storm's Undraez Lilly in the end zone, extending Sioux Falls' lead to 34-18 with 52 seconds left. Quad City's Kerrion Moore returned the ensuing kickoff 49 yards for a touchdown but, by then it was too late and the Storm secured their first win in 2022.
Wilson completed nine of 17 passes for 71 yards with a touchdown and an interception. He also rushed for 42 yards. Chavious scored a touchdown on the ground before going out of the game with injury. Dilworth caught six passes for 56 yards and a score. Marques Hendrix led the defense with 11 total tackles and a sack.
Quad City's Perkins went six of 13 for 28 yards and a score, while Keyvan Rudd had 19 yards of a pair of catches with a touchdown. Jackson recorded 10 total tackles to go along with his interception return for touchdown. Jaylin Swan added a sack to the Steamwheelers' defensive effort.
The Steamwheelers will host the Iowa Barnstormers on March 18 with a 5:05 p.m. kickoff. The Storm will visit the Bismarck Bucks on March 19 at 5:05 p.m. All times mentioned are pacific time. Click for our SCtoC 2021 Indoor Football League schedule.
