HENDERSON, NV - Use whatever gambling term may come to mind, but the Vegas Knight Hawks defense dominated the Northern Arizona Wranglers all evening.
It was a jackpot for the Knight Hawks as they recorded a 22-9 win in their first-ever game tonight at the Dollar Loan Center. Vegas let it ride and announced themselves with their initial win in the indoor Football League. Vegas now stands at 1-0 and Northern Arizona, which finished its first season (in 2021) at 1-13, fall to 0-1.
The Wranglers drove down the first on their first possession and tried to go for it on fourth-and-10 from the Vegas 18, but C.J. Jones intercepted Kaleb Barker's pass in the end zone to give the Knight Hawks the ball back. The teams battled to a 0-0 score at the end of the opening quarter.
Vegas got on the board a minute-and-a-half into the second quarter on a 28-yard field goal from Nathan Criswell. Northern Arizona answered with a 38-yarder from Brandon Torres. The Knight Hawks scored their first touchdown in franchise history when Jaylon Henderson, who came in for Dalton Sneed, fired a scoring strike to K.D. Cannon in the front of the end zone. The Knight Hawks added a field goal from Criswell as time expired in the first half. The Knight Hawks took a 12-3 lead into halftime.
Northern Arizona had the ball first to start the second half, but Barker fumbled deep in Wrangler territory and was recovered by Vegas' Meffy Kolomatangi and returned to the one-yard line. Henderson scored on a one-yard plunge to put the Knight Hawks up 19-3 with 11:19 left in the third quarter. Vegas' Kyree got the ball back for the home team when he intercepted Barker. However, the Knight Hawks were unable to capitalize as Criswell went wide left with a 35-yard field goal try.
Criswell redeemed himself with a 18-yard field goal less than four minutes into the fourth quarter. The Wranglers drove inside of the Vegas 10 before Barker was sacked by Izaah Burkes, Sr. to give the Knight Hawks back the ball. a blocked field goal attempt led to the Wranglers with the ball at the one. Barker scored on a one-yard run, but the two-point attempt failed, leaving the Knight Hawks with the win.
Henderson went eight of 14 for 71 yards and a touchdown, and rushed for 24 yards and a touchdown in the win for the Knight Hawks. Frank Brown hauled in five catches for 42 yards. Jahav Ferguson led the defense with seven tackles. Burks had a sack, while McLean and jones each finished with an interception.
Barker completed just five of 16 passes for 35 yards with two picks, and rushed for 24 yards and a score. Stanley "Boom" Williams had a pair of catches for 15 yards. Mercardo Anderson led the Wranglers in tackles with eight, while Darin Hungerford had eight. JaQuan Artis recorded a sack for the defense.
