PHOENIX, AZ -The Arizona Rattlers shut out the Duke City Gladiators in the second half en route to a season-opening win tonight at the Footprint Center.
The Rattlers held a slim 29-28 halftime lead before running the game in the second half. Arizona moves to 1-0 on the season, while the Gladiators fell to 0-1.
Duke City got on the board first on a one-yard run from Devonte Jackson. Arizona struck right back on Davonte Merriweather's 12-yard kickoff return for touchdown. The Gladiators retook the lead on a 39-yard touchdown bomb from Nate Davis to Dello Davis. After getting the ball back with a 14-7 lead, Nate Davis was intercepted by Brandon Ezell, who returned it 27 yards. Gregory Dent, Jr.'s 29-yard pass from Nate Davis gave the Gladiators a 21-14 lead with 2:31 left in the opening quarter.
Arizona drew to within a point on a two-yard run from Malik Williams. The Rattlers took a 26-21 lead with 11:13 left in the second quarter when Drew Powell hit Williams for an eight-yard touchdown. Jackson responded for the Gladiators with a one-yard run late in the quarter. Ernesto Lacayo's 31-yard field goal as time expired in the half gave the Rattlers a one-point lead at the break.
The second half was all Rattlers. They went up 36-28 on a two-yard run from Williams, which proved to be the only score of the third quarter.
A pair of touchdown passes, of eight and 16 yards, from Powell to former Northern Arizona Wrangler Todd Athey gave the Rattlers their final margin of victory.
Powell completed 10 of 17 passes for 97 yards with three touchdowns and a pair of interceptions. He also rushed for 79 yards. Williams finished with 28 yards rushing in addition to two scores on the ground and one through the air. Athey's two touchdown catches came on his only two receptions of the game. Merriweather finished with 8.5 tackles, while Ezell had an interception and Kyree Woods added three pass break ups.
Nate Davis finished 10 of 21 for 179 yards with 2 touchdowns and an interception. Jackson led all rushers with 56 yards and two touchdowns. Dello Davis had three catches for 66 yards and a score, and Dent added three receptions for 55 yards and a touchdown. Robert Brown and Byron Cooper each had 5.5 tackles for the Gladiators' defense, and Roderick Chapman and Charles Reid each intercepted a Powell pass.
The Gladiators will host the Frisco Fighters on March 26 at 6:05 p.m. The Rattlers will visit the San Diego Strike Force on March 28 for a 7:05 p.m. kickoff. All times mentioned are pacific time. Click for our SCtoC 2021 Indoor Football League schedule.
