Sioux Falls Storm 38, Bismarck Bucks 36
3/19/21 --
BISMARCK, ND - Escaping with a win is still a win.
In a wild finish, the Sioux Falls Storm survived a furious rally, including a potential tie and game-winning field goal attempt to come away with a 38-36 win tonight at Bismarck Event Center. The Storm are now atop the IFL standings at 2-0, while the Bucks fell to 1-1 on the young season. The Storm have now defeated the Bucks in all six meetings historically.
With the Storm leading by 10 late in the fourth, the Bucks scored on a three-yard run from backup quarterback Jayru Campbell. It was followed up Campbell's two-point conversion pass to Edgar Allen Poe, Jr. at the one-minute warning. That's when the fireworks started.
Down just the two points, Bucks kicker Chase Allbaugh set up to attempt a deuce which, if good, would tie the game. Allbaugh's kickoff went right through the uprights, seemingly knotting the game at 38-38, but the referees disallowed it as Sioux Falls coach Kurtiss Riggs had called a time out prior to the kick. The next attempt hit the scoreboard and was unsuccessful. The Storm go the ball back. As they were driving to run out the clock, they fumbled and the Bucks recovered with 48 seconds left. Bismarck found itself in a position once more to complete the comeback. They drove down and try a 33-yard field goal from Allbaugh. The kick was blocked and the Storm escaped with the win.
The Storm scored immediately in the opening quarter with a 42-yard bomb from Tasleem Wilson to Carlos Thompson, Jr. two minutes into the game. Tahj Tolbert was picked off by Famus Hasty deep in Sioux Falls territory. Wilson tossed a 35-yard bomb to a wide open Tim Keith and the Storm were up 14-0 with 9:09 left in the opening quarter. Tolbert's three-yard run put the Bucks on the board. The conversion attempt failed. Sioux Falls led 14-6 at the end of one.
Sioux Falls extended their lead to 17-6 on a 27-yard field goal from Sawyer Petre. Bismarck cut into the lead on a three-yard pass to the left side to John Brunner, who battled his way into the end zone. The Storm responded inside the final minute when Nate Chavious scampered in from four yards out. The Storm led 24-13 at the break.
The Storm added to their lead with a 10-yard touchdown strike from Wilson to Thompson with 5:12 left in the third quarter. The Bucks struck back as backup quarterback Campbell scored on a five-yard scramble to pull Bismarck to within 31-21 with 1:05 left. Wilson's 28-yard bomb to Aaron Dilworth at the end of the quarter, and Sioux Falls Storm led 38-21 heading into the final stanza.
Bismarck made the score 38-28 at the 8:40 mark on an eight-yard pass from Campbell to Benjamin Glines to pull to within 38-28. After a Storm turnover on downs, the Bucks took the ball and put themselves into a position to complete the comeback.
The Bucks will host the Green Bay Blizzard on March 27 at 1:05 p.m. The Storm will be at home on March 28 against the Iowa Barnstormers with a 5:05 p.m. kickoff. All times mentioned are pacific time. Click for our SCtoC 2021 Indoor Football League schedule.
