SAN JOSE, CA - A rivalry is born.
Quarterback Cory Murphy's two-yard run with 23 seconds remaining proved to be the difference as the Bay Arena Panthers claimed their a win in their inaugural game; a 38-33 decision over the San Diego Strike Force. The Panthers, who were set to take the field in 2020 before the Indoor Football season was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Surely, the wait was worth it.
The Panthers rise to 1-0 on the two-week-old season, while the Strike Force drop to 0-1. San Diego played it's inaugural season in 2019, going a disappointing 1-13. The Strike Force played just a single game, a 50-36 win against the Bismarck Bucks on the road, before the season's cancellation.
After forcing the Panthers to a turnover on downs, the Strike Force took a 6-0 lead on a seven-yard run from Elijah Ibitokun-Hanks. San Diego forced Bay area to attempt a long field goal which they returned into Panthers territory, driving down to the one. However, a four-play goal line stand by the Bay Area defense forced a turnover on downs. The Panthers capitalized, driving 48 yards and ending with a one-yard plunge from Murphy.
The Strike Force's were not able to break the tie as Tanner Kuljian's 33-yard field goal try was wide left. The Panthers broke the tie on Stevie Artigue's 27-yard field goal with 5:20 left in the second quarter. Things picked up in the last five minutes of the half. San Diego scored on a 12-yard run from Cristian Solano. Bay Area countered with a 20-yard scoring pass from Murphy to Daniel Crowell, Jr. to go up 16-13 with just under a minute to play. Davonte Sapp-Lynch's 12-yard scamper with 26 seconds left. The Panthers had one more chance to score, but the drive was halted when Murphy was picked off by Daquwan "Cheetah" Brown. The Strike Force took a 20-16 lead into the intermission.
San Diego went up by 11 a minute into the third quarter on a long touchdown from Solano to Amechie Walker, but the Panthers came right back with a one-yard run from backup quarterback Joe Newman. The Strike Force took a 10-point lead midway through the quarter on a one-yard dive from Sapp-Lynch. Newman ran in from eight yards out to pull the Panthers to within four at 33-29 with just under three minutes left in the quarter. The Panthers defense forced a turnover on downs, giving their offense to take the lead.
Bay Area pulled to within 33-32 with just under nine minutes left in the fourth quarter on a 23-yard field goal from Artigue. Newman of the Strike Force was intercepted by Marcellus Pippins, but they were unable to take the lead when Artigue's 24-yard field goal try went wide to the right. The Panthers' defense gave their offense another chance with 1:09 when it forced another turnover on downs. Murphy scored on a two-yard run to put the Panthers up by five with 23 seconds left, but the two-point conversion attempt failed.
The Strike Force got the ball back after the kickoff with 21 seconds left. A 36-yard pass from Solano to Walker put San Diego at the four yard line. Sapp-Lynch took the ball off the right guard and was stopped short of the goal line as time expired. The Strike Force called time out at the end of the play and it was reviewed, though the review determined there was no visible evidence of the time out having been called, leaving the Panthers with the five-point win in their franchise debut.
Sapp-Lynch is the younger brother of Panthers co-owner Marshawn Lynch. Sapp-Lynch was set to play with the Panthers in 2020 before the season was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. California businessman Roy Choi owns each of these teams.
Murphy threw for a touchdown and ran for two others, while Newman trampled into the end zone a pair of times for the Panthers. Solano threw for two scores and ran for another. Sapp-Lynch scored two touchdowns on the ground.
