Sugar Skulls 48, Knight Hawks 39

HENDERSON, NV - It took some late defense, but the Tucson Sugar Skulls opened up their 2022 season with a 48-39 win tonight over the Vegas Knight Hawks at Dollar Loan Center.
In what was much of a back-and-forth games, the Sugar Skulls turned back the Knight Hawks in a contest which was much closer than the final score appears. Tucson moves to 1-0 on the season, while Vegas drops to 1-1. The Sugar Skulls were the only Indoor Football team to have not played prior to this week, having byes in weeks 1 and 2.
Vegas quarterback Jaylon Henderson's 12-yard strike to K.D. Cannon put Vegas up 6-0 after Nate Criswell failed to convert on the extra point. The Sugar Skulls responded with a three-yard quarterback draw from Daquan Neal. with 8:07 left in the opening quarter. Henderson hit Cannon on a 26-yard bomb to retake the lead with 6:10 left to put Vegas up 13-7. Neal found Arthur Jackson III in the back right of the end zone to put the Sugar Skulls up by a point.
Tucson's defense held the Knight Hawks' offense to a 51-yard field goal, which was missed, giving the Sugar Skulls the ball back. The Sugar Skulls capitalized with a 10-yard touchdown rush up the middle. Tucson failed to convert on the field goal, making it a seven-point lead. Henderson found Cannon for a third time in the opening half on a 14-yard touchdown deep in the end zone midway through the second quarter. The Knight Hawks capitalized on a monster sack of Neal to pin the Sugar Skulls deep in their own territory and attempt a 60 yard field goal. The Knight Hawks took a 26-20 lead on Henderson's 39 yard pass down the left sideline to Frank Brown. Vegas took a 26-20 in to halftime.
Tucson took the lead again on a six-yard rush up the middle from Mike Jones. Henderson found Brown for an 11-yard touchdown over the middle and the knight Hawks were back up by six. The Sugar Skulls scored on a 16-yard pass from Neal to Jackson. They went for the two-point conversion with Neal converting on a run around the right tackle. After forcing a turnover on downs, the Sugar Skulls offense took over.
Neal's long touchdown to Carrington Thompson put the Sugar Skulls up 41-33 just 45 seconds into the fourth quarter. The Knight Hawks cut into the lead when Henderson found running back Elad Covaliu for a four-yard touchdown around the right side. The Sugar Skulls went up 48-39 when Neal found a wide open Jackson for a a five-yard touchdown with 1:23 left. Vegas made one last push, but turned it over on towns and Tucson was able to secure their first win over the season.
Neal threw for three touchdowns and rushed for another. Jones had a pair of scoring runs. Jackson caught two touchdowns, while Thompson had a scoring grab of his own for the Sugar Skulls. For the Knight Hawks, Henderson tossed six touchdown passes. Cannon had three of those, while Brown added two and Covaliu had one.
