Barnstormers 36, Blizzard 18

DES MOINES, IA - An early lead can pay dividends.
The Iowa Barnstormers ran out to a 13-0 lead by the middle of the second quarter, and held off a pesky Green Bay Blizzard team en route to a 36-18 win in week 4 of Indoor Football League action.
Iowa, which has won two straight, moves to 2-1 on the season while the Blizzard are 0-3. The teams meet twice more; on May 20 in Green Bay, and on May 27 back in Des Moines.
Iowa struck first on am eight-yard bootleg around the right side by quarterback Darius-James Peterson to go up 7-0 less than four minutes into the game. Ian McBorrough of the Barnstormers recovered Blizzard quarterback Torrance Gibson at their own four-yard line, but they were unable to capitalize, as Gabriel Rui did not convert on a 50-yard field goal try. The Blizzard followed that up with a missed 27-yard field goal try from Nick Jaworski.
The Barnstormers added to their lead with a pair of field goals from Rui, of 26 and 31 yards, to take a 13-0 lead by the 5:34 mark of the second quarter. The Blizzard blocked a Jaworski kick and recover for a safety. They made a change at quarterback, and Jack Sheehan hit for a cross-body, two-yard touchdown strike to Steven Newbold.. Iowa was not done, however, and Rui nailed a 47-yard field goal as time expired in the half. The Barnstormers took a 16-8 lead heading into the intermission.
Green Bay took the opening kickoff of the second half and scored on Sheehan's 11-yard touchdown toss to Keshaun Taylor. The Barnstormers came right back, scoring on A.J. Turner's 13-yard run. the Barnstormers took a 22-15 lead into the fourth quarter.
Jawarski's 37-yard field goal made the score 22-18 midway through the fourth, but the Blizzard would not score again. The Barnstormers came back on a 48-yard bomb from Peterson to Krentrez Bell. They closed out the scoring on Eric Thomas' five-yard run with 3:26 remaining.
Peterson finished 14 of 20 for 163 yards with a touchdown toss, as well as rushing for 45 yards and another score. Turner had 40 rushing yards to go along with his touchdown. Bell caught five balls for 84 yards and a score, and Alvin Bailey had five catches for 42 yards. McBurrough had nine tackles to lead the Barnstormer' defense, while Ra'Shawde Myers and Dave Calderon each had a sack.
Sheehan probably earned a starting spot next week as he went 11 of 19 for 75 yards with a pair of touchdown tosses. Gibson rushed for 42 yards before being replaced by Sheehan. Taylor was shaken up during the game, but finished with four catches for 35 yards and a score. Momodou Mbye paced the team with 10 tackles, and C.J. Thornton had a sack.
The Blizzard will be at home to face the Frisco Fighters on April 9 at 4:05 p.m. After a bye in week 5, the Barnstormers will host the Sioux Falls Storm on April 16 at 5:05 p.m. All times mentioned are pacific time. Click for our SCtoC 2021 Indoor Football League schedule.
