4/3/22 --
WORCESTER, MA - Thomas Owens caught two touchdown passes and rushed for another as the Massachusetts Pirates defeated the Quad City Steamwheelers today at the DCU Center, 36-25.
The Pirates, who were coming off two consecutive bye weeks, move to 2-0 on the young season with both wins coming at home. The Steamwheelers fell to 1-2 with both losses coming on the road. This is the only meeting between the teams this season and is the first-ever time the teams have played one another.
The Pirates took the opening kickoff and drove 45 yards in seven plays, scoring on a six-yard touchdown pass from Alejandro Bennifield to Dontez Byrd. The Steamwheelers drove to the one-yard line, but turned it over on downs. Once again the Pirates drove down the field and scored on a five-yard run from Owens. Massachusetts led 14-0 at the end of the first quarter.
Quad City got on the board early in the second quarter on Kimo Naehu's 25-yard field goal. The Pirates countered that with an 18-yard field goal from Jimmy Camacho with just under six minutes left in the quarter. Naehu nailed a 43-yard field goal with 2:52 left. The Steamwheelers attempted a short kick which bounced off a Pirate and was recovered by the kicking team in the end zone, giving Quad City new life. They took advantage with a 21-yard pass from David Perkins to Isaiah Grice to pull to within 17-13. The Pirates were unable to answer in the final 47 seconds in the half and went into halftime with a four-point advantage.
The Steamwheelers took their first lead of the game four minutes into the third quarter on Aaron Aiken's two-yard shallow pass to the left side of the end zone to a diving Londell Lee. The conversion attempt failed to a broken play set up by a bad snap. The Pirates answered with a 28-yard scoring strike from Bennifield to Owens with 4:39 left in the quarter. Massachusetts led 24-19 at the end of three.
Massachusetts went up by 11 when Bennifield found Owens for a seven-yard touchdown early in the fourth quarter. Aarion Maxey-Penton picked off Aiken's pass, which was tipped by Keyvan Rudd, to give the Pirates the ball back. The Steamwheelers took the ball back after recovering Byrd's fumble at their own eight yard line. They drove to the Massachusetts nine, but turned it over on downs. Massachusetts added to its lead on Bennifield's four-yard run up the middle with 55 seconds remaining. Quad City scored once more as time expired on Aiken's four-yard scramble up the middle.
Bennifield threw three touchdown passes and no interceptions for the Pirates. Aiken and Perkins each tossed a touchdown for the Steamwheelers.
