SAN JOSE, CA -The Vegas Knight Hawks scored 26 straight points through the first 20 minutes of the second half and soared away with a 53-27 win tonight over the host Bay Area Panthers at the SAP Center.
With the win, the Knight Hawks climb to 2-1 (1-0 home, 1-1 away) on the season, while the Panthers fall to 1-2 (1-1 home, 0-1 away. This was the first of a pair of meetings between these teams. The Panthers visit the Knight Hawks on July 2. It promises to be the start of a rivalry as these are this year's IFL expansion teams.
Bay area was unable to get Nathan Criswell's opening kickoff out of the end zone resulting in a rouge. After the Panthers turned over the ball on downs, the Knight Hawks marched down the field and scored on a three-yard run from Elad Covaliu, but Criswell's kick was no good. The Panthers came back, scoring on a 33-yard scramble from quarterback Joe Newman. Frank Brown's 18-yard touchdown from Jaylon Henderson put the Knight Hawks back in front, 14-7, with 4:49 remaining in the quarter. The Panthers scored two minutes later when Duane Gary ran it in from seven yards out. On the point-after try, a bad snap resulted in Jeffrey Allison picking it up and running it in for a two-point conversion. The panthers led 15-14 at the end of the first quarter.
Covaliu scored just over a minutes into the second quarter on a one-yard rush up the middle and Vegas went back up, 20-15. The Panthers answered on a 30-yard bomb to Kameron Pleasant from Newman. Henderson found Brown for a 30-yard score with 4:41 left in the half. Bay Area drove down to the Vegas five-yard line, but Isaiah Burks recovered a Panthers fumble caused by a bad snap. The Knight Hawks capitalized, driving down to the Panthers' two before Henderson bootlegged around the right side for the score as time expired. Vegas took a 33-21 lead into halftime.
The teams struggled in the fourth quarter with Criswell missing two field goals, and the Panthers turning it over on downs and losing the ball due to a fumble. Vegas finally broke the stalemate with a six-yard scoring toss from Henderson to Darren Woods with 2:25 left in the quarter. Vegas led 40-21 lead heading into the final quarter.
After the Panthers turned it over on downs, Kare Lyles came in at quarterback for the Knight Hawks. Lyles hit Kasey Allison on a five-yard touchdown across the middle. After Criswell's fourth missed point-after try, the Knight Hawks had a 46-21 lead. Bay Area got the ball on a short field after recovering the Knight Hawks' onside kick. The Panthers took advantage on Gary's two-yard run up the middle. Newman's two-point conversion pass was incomplete and out of bounds. Covaliu scored on an eight-yard run with 4:34 left in the fourth to put the Knight Hawks up 53-27. Recently signed backup quarterback Vincent Espinoza tossed an interception on the Panthers' next possession, resulting in the Knight Hawks with the ball at the Bay Area two, where they were able to run out the clock.
Henderson tossed three touchdown passes for the Panthers and Covaliu rushed for three scores. Frank Brown caught a pair of touchdown grabs, while Lyles threw for a score. Newman had a touchdown through the air and on the ground. Gary had a pair of trips to the end zone on the ground, and Pleasant had a touchdown grab.
