Rattlers 67, Knight Hawks 20

HENDERSON, NV - It was never close.
The Arizona Rattlers jumped out to a 26-point first half lead and never looked back as they bit the Vegas Knight Hawks in the the team's first ever meeting, 67-20, tonight at Dollar Loan Center. Arizona moves to a perfect 4-0 on the season, while the Knight Hawks fall to 2-2. Attendance was announced at approximately 5,000 persons.
The teams meet once more this season; on July 10 at Phoenix. It is the regular season finale for both teams.
Vegas had the ball first, but their opening drive ended in a 54-yard field which was well short. Arizona made its presence known when Drew Powell hit Isaiah Huston for a 12-yard touchdown strike across the middle to go up 7-0 early. The Knight Hawks drove down to a half yard from a score, but turned it over on downs. The Rattlers started deep in their own territory and, aided by a Knight Hawks' pass interference penalty, Powell's 13-yard touchdown to Braxton Haley made the score 13-0 through the end of the opening quarter.
The Knight Hawks' Jaylon Henderson was intercepted by Brandon Ezell of the Rattlers giving the visitors the ball inside Vegas territory. The Rattlers capitalized with a one-yard run from Shannon Brooks. On the Knight Hawks' ensuing drive, Henderson was intercepted by Davontae Merriweather, who returned the ball for an Arizona touchdown to put the Rattlers up 26-0 midway through the second quarter. The Knight Hawks got on the board with 51 seconds remaining in the first half when Henderson hit Brown for a two-yard touchdown pass. The Rattlers countered with a four-yard touchdown pass from Powell to Troy Pelletier with seven ticks on the clock. Vegas nearly scored again on the kickoff return, but Trey Flowers was stopped at the Rattlers eight-yard line. Arizona went into the break with a 33-7 lead.
Brooks' 31-yard catch-and-run touchdown pass from Powell put the Rattlers up 40-7 just 1:23 into the third quarter. Henderson scrambled the left sideline for an 18-yard score for the Knight Hawks. Powell's 12-yard strike to Jamal Miles put the Rattlers up 47-14 with 2:43 left in the quarter. Dillon Winfrey, the 2021 IFL Defensive Player of the Year, intercepted Henderson to give the Rattlers the ball back in Vegas territory.
Rrattlers Backup quarterback Demry Croft, who came in to start the fourth quarter, scored on a two-yard run to put the Rattlers up 54-14. Kare Lyles, Vegas' backup quarterback found Jordan McCray for a short touchdown. The Rattlers answered quickly, and then Kyree Woods intercepted Lyles with a diving catch over the wall. They took advantage of the turnover with a touchdown strike from Croft to Miles, which turned out to to be the final score of the game.
Powell finished the night with 168 passing yards and five touchdowns. All of those scores went to five different receivers. Croft added two touchdowns through the air and one on the ground.
The Rattlers will be at home on April 15 to take on the San Diego Strike Force at 7:05 p.m. The Knight Hawks go on the road to visit the Northern Arizona Wranglers on April 16 at 6:05 p.m. All times mentioned are pacific time. Click for our SCtoC 2021 Indoor Football League schedule.
