GREEN BAY, WI - Bryce Crawford's 18-yard field goal was all that it took for the Frisco Fighters to steal a 38-36 win over the Green Bay Blizzard tonight at the Resch Center.
Frisco led for nearly 48 minutes in the game, but gained the victory on the final play of the game. The Fighters move to 3-1 on the season, while the Blizzard fall to 0-4. The Fighters started their inaugural 2021 season witrh five straight wins. The Blizzard have not lost four games to start a season since 2018, when they finished 2-12 and missed the playoffs. This is the first meeting between the teams, and the only game between them this season.
The Fighters drove deep into Blizzard territory, but were stopped by the Green Bay defense. Nick Jaworski attempted a 50-yard field goal which hit the cross bar, but Green Bay's defense held on Frisco's next drive to give their offense another opportunity. The contest was scoreless at the end of one.
The Blizzard were at the 11-yard line, but Jack Sheehan's pass to the right side goal line was intercepted by Frisco's Santos Ramirez. The Fighters capitalized with an 11-yard flip pass to Justin Rankin from Blake Sims for the game's first score. Green Bay answered when Sheehan soared a pass over Ramirez's head into the hands of Shaquon Curenton for a 21-yard touchdown, and the game was knotted at 7-7 with 4:20 left in the first half. Sims scrambled around the right side for a three-yard score to put the Fighters up by a touchdown with 36 seconds remaining in the half. The Fighters attempted a 35 yard field goal, but the kick was blocked and returned by Cedric Poole 48 yards for a touchdown as time expired. Frisco led 21-7 at the intermission.
Green Bay scored four minutes into the second half on an 11-yard touchdown throw around the right side to Keshaun Taylor, though Jaworski's point-after attempt was wide right. Sims scored on a three-yard bootleg around the left side to put the Fighters up 28-17 midway through the third quarter. Sheehan's 44-yard catch-and-run touchdown to Taylor drew the Blizzard back to within a single score with just under five minutes remaining in the third quarter. Rankin rushed in untouched for a three-yard score to extend the Fighters' lead to 35-20.The Blizzard came right back with a 25-yard scoring strike from Sheehan to Dez Stewart at the end of the third quarter. Frisco led 35-27 heading into the final stanza.
The Blizzard cut into the lead with a field goal from Jaworski with 2:12 left. They took the lead on a four-yard touchdown pass from Sheehan to Taylor with 16.8 seconds remaining. The two-point conversion attempt failed, leaving the Blizzard with a one-point lead, which set up Crawford's heroics to win the game for the Fighters.
Sims finished 12 of 18 for 113 yards, along with another 32 yards and two touchdowns on the ground. Rankin, the league's leading rusher, had 89 rushing yards and a score. Rankin also caught a touchdown pass. Sheldon Augustine had four grabs for 41 yards. Trey Wafford led the team with seven tackles, and Willie Hibbler recorded a pair of sacks.
Sheehan, making his first start, went 15 of 29 for 192 yards with five touchdowns and an interception. He also led the Blizzard with 51 rushing yards. Taylor caught six passes for 86 yards and three touchdowns. Stewart and Curenton had 59 and 47 receiving yards, respectively, and a touchdown each. James Brown and Mason Gray led the defense with 10 and nine tackles, respectively.
