Gladiators 50, Panthers 28

RIO RANCHO, NM - The Duke city Gladiators took a 29-12 lead into halftime and held off the Bay Area Panthers tonight at Rio Rancho Events Center en route to a 50-28 win.
The Gladiators pick up their first win of the season and now stand at 1-3 in the young IFL season. The Panthers drop to an identical 1-3 record and now have lost three straight. The two are expected to battle for one of the IFL's eight playoff spots this season.
Duke City struck first with a 12-yard pass from Ramone Atkins to Jared Elmore. Bay Area answered with a 20-yard touchdown pass from Cory Murphy to Kameron Pleasant with five minutes left in the opening quarter. Atkins rushed in from a yard out and the Gladiators had a 13-6 lead through the end of the first quarter.
The Gladiators extended their lead to 14 points when Atkins found Darryl Stonum for a six-yard touchdown. The Panthers responded with a Duane Gary rush of one yard. The point-after try was blocked by Malcolm McCoy, who returned it for a defensive PAT two-pointer. Atkins then found Dello Davis for 25 yards for another Gladiators' score with 29 seconds left in the half. Duke City led 29-12 at intermission.
Gary scored on an 18-yard run early in the third quarter, and then rushed for the two-point conversion to pull the Panthers to within nine. Atkins threw a six-yard touchdown to Dello Davis for the Gladiators to extend the lead. Bay Area backup quarterback Vincent Espinoza's fumble was recovered by McCoy, who returned it eight yards for a touchdown for the Gladiators. Duke City led 43-20 heading into the final quarter.
The Panthers cut into the lead on Gary's six-yard run, along with his second two-point conversion run of the game. The Gladiators sealed the game on Atkins' 20-yard touchdown pass to Davis with 3:34 left in the contest.
Atkins finished 12 of 27 for 181 yards and five touchdowns. He also rushed for a touchdown. Davis led the team with 105 receiving yards and three scores. Jayson Serda led the defense with eight tackles and a sack. Jimmy Thomas recorded two sacks, while Byron Cooper had one sack.
Gary has rushed for five touchdowns in the past two games. Murphy went eight of 13 for 121 yards with a score. Pleasant had six catches for 94 yards and a score. Derik Calhoun led the Panthers defense with nine tackles.
