BISMARCK, ND - The Massachusetts Pirates' defense came through when it needed to late in the game to hold off the Bismarck Bucks tonight en route to a 54-43 win over the Bismarck Bucks tonight at Bismarck Event Center.
The game was much of a see-saw battle through the first half, with the Pirates going on a 19-point run from the end of the first half into the third quarter. The Pirates led 42-23 in the third until the Pirates rattled off 20 straight points of their own to pull within two points with 8:21 to go in the game.
The Pirates have now won all four meetings between the teams, including a win in last year's first round of the playoffs. The teams meet once more this season; on May 28 at Massachusetts. The Pirates have now won 14 straight games dating back to their seventh game of last season. Their quarterback, Alejandro Bennifield, referenced the streak in his post-game comments.
"As things got tough, we just kind of stuck together and believed in the outcome, made some plays at the end and ultimately came out with the victory," Bennifield said. "We're just taking it game by game. I didn't know about the win streak up until right now. But that's a testament to our hard work and our craft and we're going to come out every game and play hard."
Bismarck got on the board first as a scrambling Jayru Campbell found Ben Glines wide open in the middle of the end zone for a 13-yard score. Massachusetts scored on their first play from scrimmage; a 24-yard bomb from Bennifield to Isaac Zico. The Bucks answered immediately when Campbell hit Alexis Rosario for a35-yard catch-and-run touchdown to take a 13-7 lead with 10:13 left in the opening quarter. The Pirates knotted the game at 13 apiece on Bennifield's seven-yard scoring strike to Thomas Owens to cap a 48-yard drive. The Bucks went up 16-13 on Chase Allbaugh's 35-yard field goal with five minutes left in the quarter. The Pirates took their first lead of the game when Bennifield found Darren Carrington for a nine-yard touchdown. On the ensuing possession, Harlan Miller intercepted Campbell down the right sideline giving the Pirates the ball back. Massachusetts led 20-16 at the end of the quarter.
The Pirates extended their lead on a 32-yard field goal from Jimmy Camacho three-and-a-half minutes into the second. With the Bucks facing a fourth down at the Pirates' two-yard line, Campbell pitched right to Ben Glines, who tossed a floater to a diving Rosario to pull the Bucks even at 23-23 with 4:27 to go in the first half. Massachusetts scored late in the half on Bennifield's three-yard touchdown to Corey Dauphine to the right side. The Pirates went into halftime with a 30-23 lead.
Massachusetts scored on the first drive of the third quarter when Bennifield found a leaping Zico for an 11-yard score. Camacho's kickoff went off the facemask of Rosario and was recovered by Aarion Maxey-Penton to give the Pirates the ball back. They capitalized with Bennifield's 25-yard touchdown to Dontez Byrd to go up 42-23 at the 9:25 mark of the quarter. The Bucks ended the drought when Campbell rushed for a two-yard score three minutes later. The Bucks' defense then came through as Roman Morris picked off Bennifield in the end zone. The Bucks drew to within five points on Campbell's four-yard toss to Edgar Allen Poe, Jr. in the back left of the end zone. The Pirates led 42-37 heading into the fourth.
The Pirates extended their lead to 45-37 on Camacho's 21-yard field goal three-and-a-half minutes into the fourth quarter. The Bucks scored on an 11-yard bullet from Campbell to Poe, but Campbell's pass for the two-point conversion was tipped and fell to the ground. With the Pirates driving, Morris intercepted Bennifield at the goal line and returned it to the 20 yard line to give the Bucks the ball and a chance to take the lead. Allbaugh's 25-yard field goal try with 56 seconds remaining went wide right.
Bennifield finished with six touchdowns passes, a scoring run and a pair of interceptions. He threw touchdowns to five different players. Zico had two of those scores. Owens, Carrington, Dauphine and Byrd each caught a touchdown. Camacho was a perfect three of three on his field goal tries, with an IFL long this season of 53 yards.
Campbell had four touchdown passes and a rushing touchdown, along with an interception. Glines, the Bucks' running back threw for a touchdown and caught another. Rosario and Poe each hauled in two scoring passes. Morris' two interceptions were the first two picks for any Bucks player this season.
