Rattlers 66, Strike Force 33
4/15/22 --
PHOENIX, AZ - Shannon Brooks accounted for a total of five touchdowns as the Arizona Rattlers claimed a 66-33 win tonight over the visiting San Diego Strike Force at the Footprint center.
The Rattlers move to a league-best 4-0 record with the win, while the Strike Force fell to 1-4. Arizona has now defeated San Diego in all six historical meetings. This is the second of two meetings between the teams this season. The Rattlers took the first game, 48-10, at San Diego on March 28.
The 33 points allowed by the Rattlers' defense was the most they have surrendered to any opponent through five games this season.
Arizona scored on the first offensive play of the game. Drew Powell hit Troy Pelletier on a crossing route for a 26-yard score. San Diego drove down to the Rattlers' eight, but turned the ball over on downs. The Rattlers led 7-0 at the end of one.
Ernesto Lacayo recovered a San Diego fumble on the kickoff and the Rattlers added to their lead with a 15-yard touchdown catch from Powell to Todd Athey three minutes into the second quarter. Isaiah Huston's pass to Athey at the dasher board wall put Arizona up by a 21-0 margin. On the Strike Force's first play of the next drive, Steve Cluley was intercepted by Kyree Woods to give the ball right back to the Rattlers. Powell's 13-yard run put the Rattlers up by four scores. San Diego got on the board midway through the quarter on an eight-yard touchdown strike from Cluley to Rashad Ross, but the Rattlers came back with a Powell eight-yard touchdown to Brooks. The Rattlers led 33-7 at the break.
Arizona's Dillon Winfrey intercepted Cluley to open the second half. The Rattlers drove down to the one and scored on a one-yard run around the right guard from Brooks to go up 40-7. Marques "Hoodie" Rodgers' catch-and-run touchdown from Cluley for 35 yards cut San Diego's deficit to 27 with 9:27 left in the third. The Rattlers countered with a five-yard run from Brooks at the midpoint of the quarter. The Strike Force scored again when Cluley hit Prince Shonola for a three-yard touchdown. The Rattlers held a 46-19 advantage heading into the final quarter.
Demry Croft entered the game in relief of Powell and tossed a 23-yard score to Pelletier to put the Rattlers up 53-19 two-and-a-half minutes into the fourth. San Diego responded with a eight-yard run around the left sideline from Rodgers. Croft found Athey for a nine-yard touchdown to put the Rattlers up by 26 halfway through the final quarter. Rodgers struck again for the Strike Force; a seven-yard rush. Cluley's two-point conversion pass to Chris Lewis made the score 3:53 left. Brooks' six-yard rush accounted to the latter's fifth score of the game.
While Brooks was stellar for the Rattlers, Powell threw for three touchdowns and ran for another. Four receivers caught a touchdown, and Woods' first half interception gave him a league-leading four picks on the season.
Cluley threw for three touchdowns and Ross caught one of those. Rodgers, who was the all-purpose yards leader in the IFL in 2019 while playing with the Strike Force, rushed for three scores and caught for three others.
Both of these teams have byes next week. The Rattlers will visit the Frisco Fighters on April 30 at 5:05 p.m. The Strike Force are back in action on May 1 when they visit the Bay Area Panthers. All times mentioned are pacific time. Click for our SCtoC 2021 Indoor Football League schedule.
