GREEN BAY, WI - They say defense wins championships. Sometimes, defense can defeat the defending champions.
After an improbable hail-mary pass to send the game into overtime, the Green Bay Blizzard scored on their first opportunity. Their defense came up big, using an intense pass rush on fourth down to force an incompletion and earn the Blizzard a 38-31 overtime win tonight in over the Massachusetts Pirates at the Resch Center.
It is Green Bay's first win of the season and ended a 14-game winning Massachusetts Pirates, dating back to their seventh game of the season last year. The Blizzard are now 1-4, while the Pirates fall to 3-1. The teams play once more this season; on July 11 at Worcester, Massachusetts.
Massachusetts engineered a six-minute opening drive which culminated with a five-yard touchdown toss from Ajejandro Bennifield to Thomas Owens around the left side. After a turnover on downs by the Blizzard, the Pirates extended their lead to 10-0 on a 23-yard field goal from Jimmy Camacho. That would be the score to end the first quarter.
Green Bay got on the board early in the fourth quarter on Nick Jaworski's 23-yard field goal. The Blizzard countered with Jack Sheehan's 11-yard lob to a leaping Keshaun Taylor with 2:39 left in the first half. The Blizzard blocked Camacho's 50-yard field goal try and recovered to their own nine yard line. While in the pocket, Sheehan fumbled right into the hands of Pirates defensive lineman Shymere Vessels and Massachusetts was back in business at Green Bay's 23 with about 20 seconds remaining. Camacho attempted a 34-yard field goal try as time expired, but it went wide right. The Pirates took a 17-10 lead into the half.
After Jaworski's 42-yard field goal try went wide left, the Pirates were able to drive down the field and score on Bennifield's five-yard touchdown toss around the right side to a wide-open Owens. The Pirates led 23-10 at the end of the third.
Jaworski's 31-yard field goal try went wide left, giving Massachusetts the ball at their own five yard line. A Pirates fumble was recovered by Deldrick Canty of the Blizzard giving them the ball at the three. The Blizzard capitalized with a three-yard draw up the middle from Sheehan to pull within 23-17 with 12:39 remaining. Camacho went wide right from 29 yards, giving the Blizzard the ball back. Sheehan's nine yard scramble up the middle, and Jaworski's extra point, gave the Blizzard a 24-23 lead at the one-minute warning. Massachusetts re-took the lead with a six-yard touchdown around the left side to Martez Carter. The duo hooked up once more for the two-point conversion. With the ball in their own territory with 2.3 seconds left, Sheehan scrambled around the left side and launched a 36-yard hail mary, which was brought down by Dez Stewart. Jaworski's point after sent the game into overtime, tied, 31-31.
