RIO RANCHO, NM - Ramone Atkins' four-yard touchdown strike with 11 second remaining was all the Duke City Gladiators needed to pick up a home win over the Tucson Sugar Skulls tonight at the Rio Rancho Events Center.
The win lifts the Gladiators to 2-3 on the season, 2-2 in conference play and the same at home. After losing their first three games of the season. The Sugar Skulls, now at 1-3 and 1-2 in conference, have now dropped three straight. This was the first-ever win for the Gladiators over the Sugar Skulls; Tucson swept Duke City last season, 3-0.
Duke City struck first on a 24-yard touchdown from Ramone Atkins to Darryl Stonum just over a minute into the game. After recovering an onside kick, the Gladiators scored again on a 25-yard touchdown from Atkins to Dello Davis to take a 14-0 lead. The Sugar Skulls got on the board late in the opening quarter when Daquan Neal found Arthur Jackson for a 29-yard touchdown, but the point after attempt was unsuccessful. Duke City took a 14-6 lead into the second quarter.
The Gladiators went up by a pair of touchdowns early in the second with a one-yard run from Atkins. Neal's 31-yard touchdown to Quinton Pedroza cut the lead to eight and Tucson pulled to within a point with Neal's one-yard touchdown run with 56 seconds remaining in the quarter. Atkins' 33-yard touchdown to Dello Davis on Duke City's next play gave the Gladiators a 28-20 lead which they took into halftime.
Neal hit Jackson for am 18-yard touchdown to start the second half. Later in the quarter, Neal rushed for a two-yard score to give the Sugar Skulls at 34-28 with 4:30 left. Atkins hit Davis for a one-yard touchdown four minutes later and Duke City was back up by a point, 35-34 entering the final quarter.
The fourth quarter was a wild one. Mike Jones' two-yard touchdown run gave Tucson back the lead, but Atkins eight-yard score to Davis was good to put the Gladiators up by a point once again. Neal scored on a seven-yard run, and capped it with a run for the touchdown to give the Sugar Skulls a full touchdown lead at the 5:52 mark of the quarter. The Gladiators tied the game at 49 apiece when Atkins hit Jared Elmore for 20 yards with over three minutes to go. Tucson went up by three on a 49-yard field goal from Logan Justus. Atkins' four-yard touchdown to Elmore put the Gladiators up by three with 11 second left. The Sugar Skulls had the ball with one last gasp, but suffered a safety as time expired.
Atkins, likely a candidate for IFL Offensive Player of the Week, completed 29 of 38 passes for 291 yards with seven touchdowns and no interceptions, while rushing for another score. Davis hauled in 15 catches for 154 yards and four scores. Elmore caught eight balls for 71 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Jayson Serda recorded nine total tackles and a tackle for loss to lead the Gladiators' defense. Jimmy Thomas added a sack to his six tackles.
Neal finished 12 of 17 for 146 yards with three touchdowns. He also rushed for 39 yards and three scores. Jackson, Pedroza and Carrington Thompson each caught four passes, with Jackson grabbing two touchdowns and Pedroza the other. Rayshad Jackson led the Sugar Skulls' defense with 10 tackles. Elijah Belle and Michael Sam each had eight tackles each.
