SAN JOSE, CA - The Bismarck Bucks took over late in the second quarter and the second have en route to a 76-46 win over the Bay Area Panthers tonight at the SAP Center.
With the win, Bismarck moves to 3-2 in the season and 1-1 on the road. The Bucks are in third place in the Eastern Conference standings. The Panthers, who have lost four straight, fall to 1-4 overall and 1-2 at home. This first interconference meeting of the season for each team.
The point totals were each the highest for each team this season, and the Bucks' 76 points were the highest in the league on the season. This was the first meeting between the teams and the only meeting this season. The had been scheduled to meet on May 2, 2020 before that season was sidelined by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The teams traded field goals to start the game. The Panthers scored on a 10-yard run around the right side from quarterback Cory Murphy. His counterpart, Jayru Campbell of the Bucks, returned the favor with an 11-yard touchdown run of his own and Bismarck led by a point, 10-9, with 3:05 left in the opening quarter. Raysean Pringle returned the ensuing kickoff 42 yards for a Bay Area touchdown. The point-after try was broken by a bad snap, but Deondre Douglas was able to secure the ball and make it up the middle into the end zone for the two-point conversion Campbell's 25-yard bomb to a wide-open Ben Glines and the score was tied, 17-17.
Bismarck's Robert Brown intercepted Murphy on the Panther's next series, and the Bucks capitalized when Campbell plunged in from a yard out for the touchdown. with 9:28 remaining in the quarter. After Vegas' Stevie Artique's 33-yard field goal try went wide right, Campbell found Edgar Allen Poe, Jr. for a 26-yard field goal and the Bucks were up 31-17. It was Bay Area's turn for a run. Murphy hit Daniel Crowell, Jr. for a 14 yard touchdown. On the Bucks following drive, Jeffrey Allison returned Campbell's fumble in the backfield for a 28-yard touchdown to tie the game at 31-31 with 33 seconds to go in the half. Robert Brown returned the ensuing kickoff 36 yards to the Panthers' six and his twin brother, Rob, ran it in from there and Bismarck was back on top. The Panthers had an opportunity to draw even, but Murphy was intercepted by Reginald Gantt Jr. Tahj Tolbert tossed a 21-yard touchdown to Glines to put the Bucks back up by 14. Bismarck led 45-31 at halftime
Tolbert replaced Campbell after the latter was sacked earlier on the play resulting in Allison's fumble recovery. Campbell may have been injured on the play, but there was no confirmation of the reasoning of why he was replaced.
Glines' seven-yard run around the left side put the Bucks up by three touchdowns. After Vegas turned it over on downs, the Bucks extended their lead to 59-31 on Tolbert's 29-yard touchdown to Rob Brown. Joe Newman, in for Murphy, scampered down the sideline for a 20-yard score just before the third half expired. Bismarck led 59-38 heading into the final quarter.
The Bucks extended their lead at the beginning of the fourth on Tolbert's 25-yard pass to Poe. The Panthers turned if over on downs and the Bucks added a 30-yard field goal from Chase Allbaugh to up by 31. Bay area answered on a two-yard bootleg around the right side by Murphy. They added to that on, essentially the same play when Murphy ran it in for the two-point conversion with 3:49 remaining in the game. Tolbert's one-yard plunge gave theBucks their largest lead of the game, 76-46 at the one-minute warning. With Bay Area driving, Murphy was picked off by Gannt. Bismarck was able to run out the clock to preserve the win.
Tolbert threw for three touchdowns and ran for another. Campbell had two rushing touchdowns and one through the air. Glines and Poe each caught two touchdowns. For the Panthers, Murphy rushed for two scores and threw for another. Crowell caught a touchdown for the second week in a row.
