Storm 49, Panthers 27
4/22/22 --
SIOUX FALLS, SD - Nate Chavious rushed for four touchdowns as the Sioux Falls Storm pulled away in the second half to secure a 49-27 win over the visiting Bay Area Panthers tonight at the Denny Sanford Premier Center.
The Storm, which had previously lost three straight, improve their record to 3-3 on the season, including a 2-1 mark at home. The Panthers drop to 1-5 and 0-3 on the road. They have dropped five straight after winning their inaugural season's opener. The Storm's 49 points were a season high. Their previous high was 38 in a week 3 win over the Bismarck Bucks.
This was the first-ever meeting between the teams, and the only meeting between them this season. It also was the first interconference game for each team this season.
Bay Area scored right away when Raysean Pringle returned the opening kickoff 50 yards to the house. Sioux Falls came right back with a 16-yard touchdown pass from newly signed Dalton Sneed to Kahliq Muhammad. The Storm took the lead on a Chavious seven-yard run with 1:26 left in the opening quarter. The Storm led 14-6 heading into the second quarter.
The Panthers cut the lead to two points when Cory Murphy hit Daniel Crowell, Jr. for a 13-yard touchdown, but Chavious countered for the Storm with a two-yard run to put them up 21-12 midway through the second quarter. Murphy's eight-yard strike to Kameron Pleasant in the left side of the end zone cut the lead to a field goal with 56 seconds to go in the half. Sneed needed just 11 seconds to respond, as he found Carlos Thompson, Jr. down the right sideline for a 34-yard touchdown. The Storm led 28-18 at the half.
Chavious' one-yard touchdown scamper put the Storm up by 16 with just under seven minutes remaining in the quarter. The Panthers cut into that with a 28-yard field goal from Stevie Artique late in the quarter. With Sneed suffering an injury earlier in the quarter, Daniel Smith came in for the Storm and found Thompson for a 43-yard touchdown toward the end of the quarter. The Storm led 42-21 heading into the final quarter.
Duane Gary scored on a 13-yard run to narrow the score to 42-27 early in the fourth. Chavious scored his fourth touchdown of the game seven minutes later to essentially ice the win.
Sneed completed nine of 10 throws for 98 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Smith finished six of nine for 91 yards and a score. Chavious added 75 yards off 17 rushes to go along with his four touchdowns. Thompson led all receivers with seven catches for 131 yards and two touchdowns. Paris Taylor has nine tackles and a tackle for loss to lead the defense, and Marquis Hendrix recorded seven tackles in the first half before leaving the game with an injury. Sawyer Petre was successful on all seven of his extra point tries.
Murphy went six of 15 for 55 yards with two touchdowns and an interception, and rushed for 54 yards off eight carries. Gary rushed for 65 yards and a score. Crowell has now caught a touchdown in the past three contests. Derik Calhoun led the Panthers' defense with eight tackles; three for losses.
The Storm will host the Barnstormers on April 29 at 5:05 p.m. The Panthers will host the Northern Arizona Wranglers on May 1 at 7:05 p.m. All times mentioned are pacific time. Click for our SCtoC 2021 Indoor Football League schedule.
