Storm 50, Barnstormers 47 - OT

SIOUX FALLS, SD - Daniel Smith's five-yard touchdown toss to Nate Chavious in the second drive of overtime proved to be enough to propel the Sioux Falls Storm over the visiting Iowa Barnstormers, 50-47, tonight at Denny Sanford Premier Center.
The Storm snapped a six-game losing storm to the Barnstormers dating back to 2019. They improve to 4-3 and move into third place in the IFL Standings. They have also won two straight after losing three in a row. The Barnstormers have now dropped two straight. They fall to 3-3 and, heading into the rest of this weekend's games, fall in a three-way temporary tie for fourth place.
The Barnstormers won the first two meetings between the teams this season; 45-31 on March 28 at Sioux Falls and 47-37 on April 29 at Des Moines. They play a fourth time this season; June 4 at Des Moines.
Sioux Falls got on the board first courtesy of a one-yard run from quarterback Smith. Late in the first quarter, the Storm added a 32-yard field goal from Sawyer Petre. Iowa scored with three seconds remaining in the quarter when Darius-James Peterson hit Kentrez Bell for a 43-yard score. Gabriel Rui's drop-kick pulled the Barnstormers to within two. The Storm led 10-8 at the end of the first quarter.
Chavious put the Storm up 17-8 early in the second quarter with a 19-yard touchdown scamper. Peterson's 17-yard dart to Eric Thomas, Jr. in the back right side of the end zone pulled the Barnstormers back to within to points. Sioux Falls took a 20-15 lead as time expired in the first half when Petre hit from 48 yards out.
Iowa claimed its first lead of the game when Peterson found Dom McNeil for 17 yards. Sioux Falls countered on Smith's 15 yard touchdown to Aaron Dilworth put the Storm up 27-22 with just over nine minutes remaining in the third quarter. The Barnstormers countered with a 21-yard catch-and-run touchdown from Peterson to Bell. Peterson ran in the two-point conversion to put the Barnstormers up 30-27 midway through the quarter. Petre's 39-yarder tied it up with just under three minutes remaining in the quarter. Iowa took it's biggest lead of the game on a three-yard run from Peterson with just three second remaining in the third. The Barnstormers led 37-30 heading into the final quarter.
The Storm once again tied it early in the fourth. when Chavious scampered in from seven yards. The Barnstormers went up by a touchdown on a five-yard run from Antonio Wimbush, but Chavious answered on a seven yard run up the middle and the score was 44-44 with just over five minutes remaining in regulation. Iowa took five minutes off the clock, but were stopped on fourth down inside the 15-yard line with 51 seconds remaining. The Storm methodically moved the ball down to the Barnstormer's 20 where Petre lined up for a 35-yard field goal, but his kick went wide left, sending the game into overtime.
The Barnstormers struck first in overtime on Gabriel Rui's 30 yard field goal. The Storm had a chance to respond with the second possession of the extra period, and they did for the game winner.
Smith finished 15 of 25 for 111 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. He also rushed for a score. Chavious scored four touchdowns for the second straight week. He rushed for 95 yards off 19 carries with three touchdowns, and caught eight passes for 43 yards and the game winning score. Dilworth had 24 receptions on a pair of catches and a touchdown. Famus Hasty led the defense with seven tackles, while Undraez Lilly had an interception. Petre went three of four on his field goal tries with a season-long of 48 yards.
Peterson completed 13 of 21 throws for 211 yards, four touchdowns and a pick, and rushed for 50 yards and another score. Bell led the team with three catches for 77 yards and two touchdowns. McNeil and Thomas each had four receptions and a touchdown. Jordan Baldwin had 9 tackles to pace the defense, while Ian McBorrough and Christopher Robinson had two apiece. JR Stevens and Rosevelt Lawrence each recorded an interception.
