FRISCO, TX - If a single quarter can dictate a game, it did tonight.
The Arizona Rattlers capitalized on a couple first quarter Frisco Fighters mistakes to keep their distance and claim a 49-35 road win over the Fighters tonight at Comerica Center.
The Rattlers move to a perfect 6-0 record, alone at the top of the Western Conference standings. They own the best record in all of the IFL. The Fighters drop to 5-2 overall on the season and are in second place in the Eastern Conference standings, pending the Result of the Massachusetts Pirates result at home against the Vegas Knight Hawks on May 1.
The teams meet once more this season; on May 21 at Phoenix. The Rattlers now lead the all-time series between the teams, 2-0. They have won a game at home and away during the series.
Arizona scored less than three minutes into the game when Powell hit Shannon Brooks on the left side of the end zone. After a missed Fighters field goal, the Rattlers were back in business. They capitalized with a 22-yard touchdown on the right side from Drew Powell to Troy Pelletier to go up 14-0 with just under five minutes to play in the opening quarter. After the Fighters turned the ball over on downs, the Rattlers scored immediately on a 22-yard pass from Powell to Jamal Miles. The Rattlers led 21-0 at the end of one.
Frisco scored on the first play of the second quarter when Blake Sims hit Justin Rankin for a 30-yard touchdown. Cam Hilton of the Fighters intercepted Powell on the next possession and the Fighters responded with a touchdown toss from Sims to Spencer Tears to cut the lead to 21-14. Jamal Miles returned the ensuing kickoff for a touchdown to make it a two-score lead. Hilton intercepted Powell in the end zone. They Fighters drive ended as the Rattlers scored on a safety when they recovered a Fighters fumble in the end zone. After the safety, the Rattlers got the ball deep in their own territory, Powell scrambled to his left, but the ball was punched out by Nate Anderson and recovered in the end zone by Charles Williams. The Rattlers led 30-21 at the half.
Frisco's Bryce Crawford missed a 50-yard field goal to open the third quarter, but it was wide to the left. Arizona scored two plays later when Powell launched a 45-yard touchdown bomb to Braxton Haley to push the lead to 36-21. T.J. Edwards replaced Sims at quarterback and scored on a six-yard run around the left side to pull the Fighters to within nine with 4:59 left in the third. Cedric Poole's leaping interception of Powell on the quarter's final play put Frisco back in business at their own seven. The Rattlers led 36-27 heading into the final quarter.
The Fighters were unable to capitalize on the turnover as they turned it over on downs while in their own territory. Arizona extended its lead to 42-27 with 10:23 left the fourth with a touchdown from Powell to Pelletier. Edwards ran it into the right side of the end zone from three yards out. The Fighters added the two-point conversion on Edwards' flip pass to Tears with 5:21 remaining. The Rattlers scored just over a minute later on Brooks' two-yard run up the middle.
Powell completed 13 of 21 passes for 168 yards with five touchdowns, but also threw four picks. Pelletier's two touchdowns came on his only two catches of the game. Miles ended with five receptions for 68 yards and a score, while Haley had three grabs for 56 yards with a touchdown. Davontae Merriweather and Kyree Woods had nine and eight tackles, respectively for the defense.
Sims ended his night seven of 15 for 49 yards and a pair of scores. Edwards finished seven of 13 for 72 yards and two rushing touchdowns. Sims seemed to have won the quarterback competition, but that could change after this game. Jerminic Smith hauled in a scoring grab, along with 55 yards off six receptions. Hilton pulled off a hat trick of interceptions on Powell, and Poole added an interception to his four tackles on the evening. Trey Wafford led the defense in sacks.
